Monday meal ideas: School holiday baking

Here we are at the first “proper” day of the school holidays. We’ve had a weekend of tantrums, meltdowns, banned devices and today’s playdate cancelled, so we are well and truly on track! Now that we have all that over and done with we can get on with the holidays (it always takes a good few days to adjust to life as a family of 5 at home).

If your family is anything like mine, they will ask for food 456 times a day. So prep your morning & afternoon teas with something baked. Plus! Get the kids involved and it should pass some time too. Plus! Baked goods for you to console yourself with.

Good luck with the next few weeks. We are here until Thursday and then heading up to the farm for 2 nights before heading to Byron for a week! I’m so excited, I’ve never been before. We are having a reunion with all Rob’s family who we went to Italy with last year – lots of family time which will be awesome. And if it’s not minus in the mornings, then I will be happy!

Got some tips for me for Byron? Happy days friends, here’s to well behaved kids and baked goods, the “not shoving shit in my mouth” can wait 2 weeks.

  1. Made your hot cinnamon donut cake for election day cake stall this weekend. Sold within 10 minutes of going on display. Have made it several times before. Great recipe Beth!

  2. Lisa Mckenzie says

Yum,have a lovely trip to Byron Beth Xx

  3. Enjoy your family time in Byron and definitely try to get to cute little Bangalow – a beautiful village town just off the highway. Heaven

  4. I’m very jealous of your trip to Byron – we love it there – so fabulous with the kids. I know you and your family are all amazing cooks but if you want a night out for a big group the Treehouse on Belongil (primarily a pizza place) is really good fun depending on where you’re staying. It’s a 10 min walk north along the beach from the town centre and they often have awesome live music which my kids always enjoyed. Also, if the girls need to burn off some energy mine did a Circus class at Circus Arts – my daughter went on to do Aerial Silks classes back in Sydney she enjoyed it so much and the flying trapeze was a huge favourite with both. Have a lovely family reunion. L x

  5. We’ve been to Byron for the last couple of years and love it! The circus skills class was great for kids, and Chris Hemsworth happened to be there with his two little ones the day we were so that was a good distraction while I waited for the class to finish! Three Blue Ducks at The Farm is awesome, Harvest at Newrybar is also supposed to be great but we never got there. Dip cafe is pretty good, Top Shop burgers and breakfast, the Atlantic Italian. Byron markets are good but Bangalow are supposed to be better if you’re there when they’re on (once a month, not sure which week). There’s some good shopping too but it’s the food that stands out (always the food)! Oh & my husband loves the local brew, Stone & Wood. He did a tour & tasting of the brewery in the industrial area right near the circus school for about $10 with a tasting & recommends it. Enjoy!!

  6. Go to Harvest Cafe in Newrybar. Just west of Byron. Lovely place for a bit of a crowd. Book first though. Have fun. ?

  7. Ok, that doughnut tea-cake should be illegal!!! UGH my hips hate you Beth!! My kids however LOVE you!!
