Old dog, new tricks

I love taking photos. It’s not something that has come naturally to me, but it’s something I love so much. Over the years and over thousands and thousands of photos I think I might have gotten a little bit better at it. I still kind of wing it on manual, all my photos are straight out of the camera and are never processed despite Rob’s constant nagging at me to.

I suppose I just love the process of it. Capturing moments in time. A laugh. A scene. Light. Whatever it is, it’s something I have seen, just as it is, or perhaps, through my eyes, as I see it.

This weekend I am lucky enough to have the chance to experience a once in a lifetime chance to do all of that, in one of the most beautiful places in the world, in Queenstown New Zealand. I have a new camera, an Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III to use and start all over again with.

We arrived this afternoon and have settled into the stunning scenery of this place. The LIGHT. Oh my goodness the scenery and the light. Lucky for me I am with a group of photographers who get it. I’m being challenged and getting a little frustrated as I seem to be starting all over again, not knowing where my diners go, how to get it like I like to shoot. But I’ll get there. That’s the thing with photography. It takes practice and practice and then some practice. It’s never perfect, but it’s my moments, seen through my eyes.

I’m in some pretty good company too. Olivia from House of White, Rachel from Sesame Ellis, Chantelle from Fat Mum Slim, Rebel from Rebel without a Cause, Lorraine from Not Quite Nigella to name a few. Somehow, I think this dog may just have some new tricks to learn yet…

Are you a photographer or aspiring one?
Do you find it hard?
Do you process your photos or just wing it and have a crack?

I’m here as a lucky guest of Olympus

  1. I bit the bullet two years ago and signed up for a 3 week online course to learn how to use my DSLR on manual (had been promising myself I’d read the manual and teach myself for two years ?). Best thing I did. I’ve still got so much to learn but glad to know the basics while my kids are young. Would love to take a trip like yours to fully focus on taking photos

  2. I fell in love with photography when doing a 365 grateful project. I did a local course to learn how to use my entry level Nikon camera on manual. This ignited the passion more and I then went on to do a Diploma in Professional Photography online. I upgraded my Nikon camera and bought a few lenses. These days though, I struggle with carting around the camera and its lenses and it puts me off photography for that reason. The weight of it all! I’ve tried a backpack [not convenient] and a camera bag [too heavy on my shoulder]. The other day I watched a live FB thingy with Christina of Hair Romance and she was talking about the mirrorless Olympus and how she has never looked back since changing from a DSLR. How it is so much lighter and easier to carry around and how well it performs in low light … and just like that it occurred to me that maybe that is my solution! I need to learn more but I need to make photography more practical for me so that I can still indulge in the passion … and be able to carry my gear around when travelling! Looks like you are all going to have a fabulous time over there. Lucky ducks! Look forward to seeing all the photos and reading all the stories!

    • I’ve used a Canon 750 for a few years now and struggle with the weight of it…and I don’t even swap around lenses! This Olympus size even with the kit lens on which takes a good snap is a GAME CHANGER. Can’t wait to do a full run down post on it all…watch this space!
