Babymac Book Club: The Dry

After lots of messages asking what the next book is in the BabyMac Book Club I trotted off to the local bookshop this morning for a look around. Just quietly (pun intended) is there ANYTHING better than a bookshop? I LOVE them. Not so much when I have a 2 year old with me who wants to “I go home now Mummy. Let’s GO HOME MUMMY” and I end up blowing over $20 in activity books just to keep her quiet while I have a quick look and receive the glares from the retired folk of Bowral who are filling their mornings perusing book shops. Bring that day on!

Anyway, a book shop.

We have a couple of great ones in Bowral, this morning it was the Book Shop Bowral where I actually asked the good people that worked there what book to choose. There are SO many good ones at the moment and I had about 4 or 5 in my hands before choosing The Dry by Jane Harper. So with a growing pile on my bedside table I figured we better throw ourselves into another round and get cracking so we can get some more in before the year is out.

If you are new to the idea of this virtual book club here’s how it plays out.

HOW IT WORKS

We chose a book (you can send me suggestions at any time so I will go to you guys with a short list and we can vote…or maybe I will just choose!). We have 6 weeks to read the book (I was going to make it a month but we all know that’s not going to work). Then we come on and have a chat about it, I’ll ask some questions and we can comment on here as well as on Facebook (I think it’s an easy platform for throwing around quick ideas/conversations) which we can do over a glass of wine on our couches. We can all pretend we are sitting around my fire if we close our eyes…

#BABYMACBOOKCLUB ROUND SIX

Thanks to the great suggestions from the book shop (and also a few of you suggested this) I have chosen The Dry by Jane Harper. You can grab it online for just $12.50 at the moment too!

WHO REALLY KILLED THE HADLER FAMILY?

Luke Hadler turns a gun on his wife and child, then himself. The farming community of Kiewarra is facing life and death choices daily. If one of their own broke under the strain, well …

When Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk returns to Kiewarra for the funerals, he is loath to confront the people who rejected him twenty years earlier. But when his investigative skills are called on, the facts of the Hadler case start to make him doubt this murder-suicide charge.

And as Falk probes deeper into the killings, old wounds are reopened. For Falk and his childhood friend Luke shared a secret … A secret Falk thought long-buried … A secret which Luke’s death starts to bring to the surface …

So we are looking at another Australian novel (this time a crime) by print journalist Jane Harper who lives in Melbourne. This is her debut novel and it has won a couple of awards: ABIA (Australian Book Industry Awards) General fiction book of the year as well as ABIA Book of the year and The Australian Independent Bookseller Indie Book of the Year Award 2017.

NEXT STEPS

Buy or borrow the book (for real or on your e-reader device) and get reading! You can buy it from Booktopia here for just $12.50. There will be a post book wrap up virtual book club here on the blog on Tuesday 12th September 2017 (6 weeks time). You can leave your comments on the post and we will aim to have a Facebook chat that night from 8pm (AEST) so pour your wine and get ready for a natter. Send me through any suggestions for books in the meantime and we can work out what the next one will be. I can’t promise Proust but I hope we can get through some good reads that will get us back into books instead of being lazy (like me) and spending all my time online at night.

Hope you can join in! Any questions, just let me know…oh and use the hashtag #babymacbookclub if you’re that way inclined. Let’s try and get our reading mojo’s back!

Happy Reading friends!

    Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

Not a English historical drama despite the title.
It won a Pulitzer and is a seriously cracking read.

Btw, someone told me Reece Witherspoon has bought the movie rights for The Dry. Any idea if it’s true?
