One thing: that sunny spot

I think that when you move into a house it takes a long time to make it a home. I think you need to live in a space to work out what’s needed, where the good spots are, the places you want to spend time in a room and then what needs to go in there. Our house has been a continual process filling up with bits and pieces and it’s been interesting this week after having an interview about it that I’ve been thinking about it and of course running around to make it look at its best for the photoshoot later in the week.

All of my #onethings and a good dose of nesting when pregnant this year have helped me get the place looking really good at the moment which is good timing! And how nice to be able to enjoy it looking so good, rather than doing it to go on the market and have someone else enjoy.

For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.

One thing I have wanted to do since we moved in was create a little seating area on the verandah down near our bedroom. We have a long verandah that catches the northerly sun all year round – most of the bedrooms have french doors that open out to it and in the summer all the poles are covered in star jasmine that when flowers looks and smells amazing. We have our outside table on this verandah where we eat in the warmer months, but there’s been a spot just asking for a table and chair.

Last weekend in my frenzy of activity I finally got it sorted. I ducked into Barbara’s Storehouse (a local institution down here) and got just the things I was after…a couple of chairs a wee table and a rug.

I’ve found myself down there throughout the week. It’s the perfect spot for a cuppa, to answer emails on my laptop, watch the kids on the trampoline and I just know when the time is right… a G&T on a warm summers evening.

It maybe took me 10 minutes in the shop, 5 minutes unpacking from the car and setting up. These silly things…why did I wait 5 years? Now I have a lifetime to sit and enjoy it…that’s alright by me.

There’s been plenty more this week….but this was my favourite.

What was your one thing this week?
What’s on your home wish list? A painting? Piece of furniture?
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…

  1. We live in the granny flat under my mum & dads place. It is the size of a shoebox so arranging furniture in it resembles a game of tetris. I love your sunny spot on the verandah. A table & chairs for the paved area outside our shoebox is on our list of things we want.

It’s a gorgeous setting Beth and a lovely spot to sit in,make sure you do sit there and catch some sun ❤️??

  3. A bed! Needed it, dressed the kids on a Sunday afternoon, packed them in the van and we went and bought one…..a big one! Plus beautiful new linen, doona and cushions, lots of beautiful over-priced cushions. Six kids and no sleep, we deserved it. Now I want an outdoor lounge so we can enjoy our verandah. Loving your sunny spot!

  4. I spent a couple of hours re-arranging the veranda today and moving things around. When you live your forever home, part of the joy is taking things slowly and discovering new ways to enjoy it! I love your choices!.. Isn’t Barbara’s the best? Xx

Sounds perfect Beth, I already feel like I want to join you for a G&T in that spot. Enjoy!

  6. Our balcony never gets the sun so at this time of the year it looks so inviting but it is so freezing! As we are on the side of a hill in Robertson it’s so windy… But looking out to the hills and the cows is priceless…and out two busy border collies…… Love it!

  7. Love the outdoor setting, great pick, Beth. Lots of ‘one things’ on the list, having been living in our newly built home for 10 months. I completely agree with you about it taking time to work out how you want your home to look. A room I thought wouldn’t get much use, gets used every day: my reading/sitting room. I can see the kids in the family room but also close the sliding doors and shut the noise out if needs be. The sitting room faces north so gets all the gorgeous sunshine on a sunny wintry day; it is the most delightful room to sit in with a cuppa and a book or mag.

  8. Love that seating area, it looks like a very relaxing spot. My one thing this week was finally getting new sun shades for the car. The temperature is over 40c in August and I’ve been meaning to replace them since last summer. Now at least I won’t burn myself on the steering wheel today!

  9. We always get off track with our hundreds of ‘one things’ during the winter, but I think we’re getting back into the spirit of it. I can’t wait to have a place we’re really happy in (but could also pop onto the market if we ever feel the time is right without too much effort). We’re 7 years in and still making our home!
