Round 1: Oregano express v Bangarito

It’s been a big week round these parts. Tension mounting. Pressure on. Last night we had our first round of Battle of the Banger where Rob entered his first ever attempt at a sausage on behalf of the Macdonald clan. You can get a bit of back story on the comp in this post and this one from last year.

Rob had an inspired idea for his entry. I can’t give the recipe, but I can tell you the flavour profiles. Think mexican inspired. Some jalapeno. Beef. Lots of spices, chili, garlic. Think taco in a snag. HELLO! He had the theory, we just had to put it into practice. Lucky for us I borrowed Mum’s kitchen aid and my Step Dad’s sauso attachment (I agree it’s wrong that I don’t own a kitchen aid too) as well as our mate who had also borrowed this equipment the week before for his entry. We had help. We had equipment. We had vision. We had cute babies watching on. And at the end we had 12 perfectly formed snags ready for hanging overnight.

We headed up to the pub last night for the cook off with plenty of time for beer and dinner with friends – the place was pretty packed – why wouldn’t it be? This is a crowd pleaser. There were kids running around everywhere, champagne flowing and pizza eaten. And then? Well it was time. SHOW TIME.

This round Rob was up against Justo. Justo’s creation was named the “Oregano Express”. A pork sauso, with oregano obviously, and some other things I can’t quite recall. It was a good-looking sausage. And tasty. Both sausage’s were placed in dishes for the blind tasting. Kyles who works behind the bar then walked around to count the votes.

The bell was rung, the bar quiet while both men explained their creations to the crowds. Ed then announced the winner….SAUSAGE A.

BERT’S BANGARITO! Ding! Ding! Ding! He won! A triumph and a frightening prospect that we will have to do it all over again in a few weeks time for round 2. Well done Rob!

  7. Luisa Munoz says

Viva la mejicana sausage!! Perhaps the next round could be a German inspired snag with the name – Achtung Baby! xx

  8. Whoot! Whoot! Sounds awesome! I think we will likely need to start a “Kitchenaidless” support group. I have my eye on a nice one in a vintage green. Really it should be living with me now.

Happy to be a part of that group. We can just post pictures of them and look on at them adoringly.

    Thanks love!

  10. Congrats on the sausage win … but I got sort of stuck on the bit where you said you don’t own a kitchen aid. I just can’t believe that your beautiful, colourful house doesn’t have a beautiful, colourful kitchen aid in it. You seem like a kitchen aid sort of gal … maybe Santa could bring you one ;0)

Mex Sausage – “nice, nice, unusual, different, nice”…kath and kids aside, they sound delish!

  12. Trishles says

They sound fantastic! Dont know what John can do to match that effort. Ed sent us a photo in Vietnam. Well done.

  13. I live very close to you, and as much as I think the local meat merchants are fab, the sausage industry leaves me wanting. I make my own free form ones (no casing, think chevaps but better). I don’t want to be a wringer, I love our meaty men and women, but I’ve had fat pouring out of sausages, and so much salt in others, my blood pressure rises just thinking about it. I’m pissed I never hear of these things, sausage Olympics etc, do I live under a rock? I must.
Also, where do you get your organic f&v you mentioned in a post some time back, I just don’t know. There must be something wrong with me.

    • BabyMacBlogBeth says

I’m amazed how easy it has been to make the sausages…now we know the options are ENDLESS! For the Fruit and Veg look up Dhimbalee organic produce run by Lisa Lavers down in Wildes Meadow…they sell at a variety of markets too. Good luck!

Love it ,that’s what you get from living in a small community sausage comps at the local pub,Congatulations for winning it must have been good.
