Yabbie Day

Each year there are a few things that happen in the Village that bring the community together. There’s the Easter Markets, the fire works on the June long weekend, Christmas Eve and in late February, there’s Yabbie Day. Local kids catch their yabbies, bring them to the pub to be weighed in, and race, collect your prizes and have some cordial and a sausage sambo. Of course! This year we headed down to a local creek where you are bound to pull out a yabbie. After torrential rain, the sun was out so we headed down to try our luck. As a young girl, I was always catching yabbie’s at my cousin’s farm so I like to think I knew what I was doing.

We used my old favourite – sausage meat in a stocking. We tried and tried. And then? Just when I thought we were done? BINGO! We got one.

And it was a good one. The girls were happy with just the one combined entry and I was happy that I could still pull up a yabbie, 25 years later.

We headed up to the pub for the competition. It was fierce. Those Donovan’s were there in force again.

Meet the winner of “Prettiest Yabbie”. Isn’t she? Show pony!

And meet the Grand champion…weighing in at 191 grams! He belonged to Rory who was quite pleased with himself. Our humble fella was just 97 grams.

We sat in the late afternoon sunshine and ate sausage sandwiches.

And then we raced them. Ours came third! They all ran backwards.

Then we walked home. Past the cows that are back now there is some feed in the paddocks again. Racing the late summer storm clouds as they rolled in.

Past the wild apple tree.

Taking in the very start of Autumn that’s starting to appear.

Nattering and eating toobs in our gumboots as we went.

I like Yabbie Day very much indeed.

  1. What a wonderful day was had by everyone. I often wished my folks hadn’t had to move to the metro area when I was 6. I know I’m a country person at heart!!
Thanks so much for sharing your day with us and those beautifull photos. xx

  2. Yabbie Day is exactly the kind of day why we all want to move to the country. Fabness defined. x

  3. Looks like a great day! I love the girls gumboots too. I am a sucker for a pretty gumboot and my daughter and I have been known to own quite a few pairs each. Living in the country means I can justify it.

  4. You live in such a magical place…actually I think we all live in a pretty magical place but you make your place sound extra magical!

And that little knee poking though the hole in the tights is adorable!

  5. Beatiful pics.

  6. What a great day…but I hardly dare ask….what became of the yabbies?

    • I can’t speak for the others but ours was returned to the creek by me! There is much talk to them being returned to dams to be fattened up for the following year…not sure many were cooked up this year.

  7. Right, that’s it, I’m getting out of the bloody ‘burbs! The countryside looks so beautiful and the yabbies are biting.

  8. Idyllic!

  9. a wild apple tree and the start of autumn 🙂 Looks like wonder and bliss and I already live in the country!

  10. Sounds like a lovely day – all except racing the yabbies, that just doesn’t sit well with me at all unfortunately :-/
