One thing: a simple trip to the hardware store

Oh it’s SO good to have the bigs back at School. There’s time to get stuff done! Well, as much as you can with an almost two year old in tow. But since Wednesday I have hit the ground running all in the name of GETTING SHIT DONE.

While most of it has been everyday typo stuff, yesterday from 8.45am until 9.30am it was: school drop off, bakery, chemist, fruit shop, post office, home type stuff but this morning it was eyebrow wax and tint at 10.15am so I decided to quickly pop into a local hardware shop to get some plants that needed replacing in pots about the place. Not quite a #onething task, but a task nonetheless. What followed though, was a super cell of #onething activity the likes not seen since the week before Maggie was born (almost 2 years ago!).

For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.

A simple walk through the aisles post nursery section saw me grabbing things I didn’t even KNOW I needed. Well I knew, but I just always forgot.

Plants. Tick!
Mirror for the bedroom. Tick!
Hooks for hanging. Ticks!
Frames. Tick!
Mould removing stuff. Tick!
Other cleaning products. Tick!
Garden stuff. Tick!

The trolley was full and Maggie was delighted at the adventure. We got home, she went to bed and then the pottering began. Productive pottering, nothing better!

Plants are ready to go in tomorrow.

The haiku that we had done in NY are now in frames and on the wall!

Other pictures that needed hanging up, and now in situ again.

A deeply unpleasant mould situ behind my beloved chair has been seen to and cleaned within an inch of its life.

A fire extinguisher I have been meaning to get for our kitchen for, you know, 7 years is now sitting in my pantry.

A full length mirror I have been meaning to get for our bedroom for, you know, 7 years, is now on the wall.

I haven’t felt this productive in a VERY long time. And I have lists that have been crossed off, and new ones added. All from a simple stroll down the aisles of a Hardware Store.

Well I’ll be!

What was your one thing this week? Or what’s planned for the weekend ahead?
I can kind of see what the attraction is with hardware stores now…
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…

  1. Oh wow!! Especially love that mirror! That’s my #onething I need to do – just haven’t found the right one yet!!

I am pleased to say though one MAJOR thing is happening at our house! Cabinets for the kitchen – overheard ones we thought we would never need (ha idiots we are) and to make it even better, my study nook cabinetry will happen at the same time!!
    Yahoooo!!!

Love the #onething! Very helpful with three kids here too, youngest being 11months and second is only at preschool two days – so motivating enough to knock something off the list!

  2. Woohoo! Yay you! Those days are the best days!

  3. At just shy of 40 weeks pregnant my house has been organised within an inch of its life…. the only thing remaining on my list: labling draws/cupboards (crazy lady here I know!) then everyone will always put everything back where it belongs the first time and I’ll never have to organise a cupboard/draw again…. oh I even make myself laugh because I’m at the delusional stage of pregnancy!!!!

  4. My one thing today was emptying all the beans out of a giant, bright yellow, faux fun banana shaped beanbag and then soaking, washing and drying said giant, bright yellow faux fur banana shaped beanbag before refilling again with all the beans….whew (that beanbag has been owned for 15 years and I’m not confident it has ever been washed; turns out that it’s original colour is actually quite a bright yellow (who knew under the grime!)

  5. well done you!
a productive day here too! 2 very large strawberry guavas re potted and a sensor light put up on the shed! … more go up tomorrow!
when you’re on a good thing!!!
    much love m:)X

  6. Wow! Go you!! I’m the queen of procrastination ? I have lofty dreams of painting my daughters bedroom and the family bathroom this weekend. Hahahahahaha!

  7. The ‘one thing’ posts are my absolute favorites. You always get so much more done than just one thing. Very inspiring and motivating. Love the mirror photo!

  8. We just relocated to a ten acre block in NZ so my one thing list has, conservatively, about 50 bajillion things on it. With a 2yo and 7mo underfoot. Deep cleansing breaths.

  9. love days like that x

  10. okay love – where is that shirt from please?
