This morning I let the chooks out and checked to see if they had laid yet. Like I have every day for the past 8 weeks or so. This morning? Pay day! Eggs! We quickly cooked them up for breakfast and went and thanked the ladies for their hard work.
This afternoon the girls went and pulled some carrots, plucked some warm strawberries and ate them whole.
Our garden is giving us so much, with very little put back in. Some sun. Some water. Some love. It feels good.

We have oodles of rosemary. A few other bits and bobs. No chookies tho. Just 2 rampaging dogs.
Rosemary is good! I have used excess stalks for lamb koftas before. YUMBO.
Warm strawberries? Warm strawberries? We don’t have those here in Melbourne at the moment….. Looks lovely though

We have 6 chooks and it’s lovely to get the eggs. I’m glad we’re not the only one growing crazy carrots! All twisted and bent 🙂
I think it’s because it’s not deep enough…they don’t last long though and the girls certainly don’t seem to mind…all tastes the same!
We get some pretty funky shaped carrots, quite funny, but as you say taste the same. We were told once it has something to do with the soil, but we simply plant and if it grows…woo hoo!!
Silverbeet, rainbow chard & two varieties of spinach are going bonkers in my garden. I swap massive bunches with friends for their eggs. I have corn, 4 varieties of tomatoes, 3 varieties if chilli, pumpkin, zucchini, watermelon, raspberries, onions & potatoes all growing right now but none are ready to harvest. Everyday I go check on them because the anticipation is KILLING me!!!
And then one morning…pay day! Hope it’s soon x
OH BETH! I am bursting with pride. Look at you go! Make a farmers wife out of you yet young lady. Our chooks give us about 3-4 eggs a day, bit slack (there’s 5 of them) and husband is threatening the axe leaning against chook pen – eeeek! I have a plethora of silverbeet, rainbow chard and spinach at the moment. And ice berg lettuce. And snails! Not regular garden snails, these funny little white South Australian coastal buggers. Coffee grounds have been spread, jars of beer buried, to no avail. We just (lately) planted our potatoes, bad potato farmers daughter indeed. Also got some beans planted to grow along a rickety old fence, my zucchini got munched by rabbits though I think, and cabbages just gave me lots of leaves.

Those white snails are so hard to kill! Looks like bay in the pot to me 🙂
Yes it’s a bay tree…a very happy bay tree. Potatoes have all been put in all around here…so many paddocks filled with them – we live in potato country! Good luck with those snails x
Spud country is God’s country. We may have timed our wedding day to be when the spuds would be in bloom for photos 😉
I have weeds growing in my garden…oh how I wish to grow veges and have chooks running around. Might have to talk to the hubby about a sea change??!

Carrots, tomatoes, strawberries and lettuce. And my roses have just started again. I’m in my happy gardening place at the moment 🙂
All my roses are budding up like mad at the moment too – love it!
I’ve just killed an eggplant plant but have a healthy little crop of spring onions/shallots growing!
Our shallots are pretty happy at the moment too. Handy isn’t it?
We’ve got two hens, two eggs a day. Hubby brought a rooster home free, from a car boot sale last month. Just waiting for one of the chooks to turn broody and we may have little chickens. Just about finished harvesting broad beans, have some impressive cabbages coming on in the patch too.
Baby chicks! Goodness me!

I think I read in the paper last weekend that it was the best way to eat them – releases the flavour or something. It does make a difference!

Once the pool is done, we’re creating a 3rd space in our backyard dedicated to a veggie patch. I want to grow a lemon tree (for tea/cooking), a mandarin tree (for snacks) and a lime tree (for vodka cocktails) and also some herbs and veggies.
I’m shithouse at gardening, but I reckon this will help me improve!

My chooks are basil fiends! Hoping the eggs are flavored as they are eating the whole freaking lot! Just salvaged enough tonight to make pesto. My carots looked like yours, very home grown. My kids are loving the whole veg garden thingy. They are great eaters but love the home grown aspect. Btw, our chooks think they rule the house. Much bossier than the 3 dogs. If they are not let out in the morning, they will carry on when the door or gate opens so we know they are there. Love my bold ladies!
They really are the funniest things – such personality!
Right now we are eating silver beet (broad beans just finished) with leeks nearly ready and tomatoes that are growing at a terrific rate with fruit on. Cucumbers going in soon.
We had chooks some years back but a man has built a monstrosity of a house just by our back fence so now a chook pen would be too close to his house. Damned nuisance. We used to so enjoy fresh eggs too and even shared with family or neighbours. Back then.
