There’s two things I love most about #onething.
For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.
Every single week that I have been doing this the first thing I always say is “That was SO much easier than I thought”. All these simple (and annoying) things that keep getting moved from one list to the other can really be wiped off if you just tackle it. They will ALWAYS be easier than you thought.
And secondly I love that every time I have done them I have pretty much said “why didn’t I do that sooner?” They may be small and annoying (changing a light globe, replacing a battery) or bigger and annoying (cleaning out the wardrobe or kitchen) but always the satisfaction levels are high as soon as it’s done and you wonder why you just didn’t tackle it sooner.
This week was the perfect example of a small and annoying thing on the #onething list. It’s probably 2 summers now that I have been looking at the cherry tree in our backyard thinking I need to trim those bottom limbs off it. They hang down, they make it hard for the mower to get under and one day recently when I was looking out at it from the kitchen sink I snapped. CUT THE LIMBS ALREADY BETH.
And what? 10 minutes later the job was done. Huh.
That was easier than I thought.
Why didn’t I do that sooner?
It actually probably needs more of a cut back, but right now, that’ll do pig. These things aren’t life changing but they are annoying little things that we know we have to do and we let slide, and slide and slide unit they can become BIG annoying things. I say tackle that #onething today!
What was your one thing this week?
Anyone else need to get stuck into the garden as well? Again? It’s never ending this time of year.
Is your desk Pinterest or dump worthy or something in between?
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…
My one thing this week was recovering the toy box. It’s only been 7 yrs since we bought the fabric to do it. No need to rush these things right? The thing was I knew that getting it done meant that all the toys needed to be sorted. Done! Random scraps of paper, felts that don’t work, old Maccas toys, broken bits dumped, a giant pile of baby toys compiled to donate, and stuffed toys, train set, cars, etc all in handy crates stacked and easily accessible in the newly covered toy box. Does that mean that I’ve done two things this week or does it only count as one? Next thing to do is actually take the donations pile and get it out of the house. Maybe next week…
Oh that is a very good one thing indeed! LOVE that feeling of all those bits of CRAP being gone.
The second draw in the kitchen. I bought new dividers, emptied the draw, put in what we use regularly and tossed the surplus. 5 minutes, tops.
Brilliant! Of the things you find in that drawer!
My one thing is sweeping the balcony. I’m staring at all the dead leaves, they’re staring at me…. it’s a battle of wills.
My estimated due date is tomorrow and so far there are NO signs of this kid being born. Maybe sweeping the balcony will be the One Thing that gets it all moving?
I’ll do it.
After lunch.
I hope you are either resting…or snuggling a newborn!
Like you Beth, I kept looking out at the Buddleias that desperately needed cutting back. So very early yesterday morning, out I went. Well three hours later I was still out there having cut back virtually anything and everything I could lay my trusty secateurs on, salvias, wayward bougainvilleas, lavender, roses etc. I had created huge piles around the garden that hubby then cleared up for me. However he did mention that perhaps next time when climbing around the garden I should wear appropriate clothes and shoes. I couldn’t see anything wrong with my nightie, complete with pockets to pop secateurs into and my rubber flip flops!
Another thing crossed off my ‘just one thing’ list….
Well done!
Your cherry tree looks a lot better now! Top job!
My one thing this week… I think I would say play more with my kids. I realised I was spending waaaaay too much time doing stuff. And not enough time enjoying the little people I helped create. And it’s been good 🙂
Thankfully my mother in law came around to help tidy the garden today. She was feeling cranky and said it made her feel better. Everyone wins! Plus I got to help her with her blog 🙂 She’s finding blogging addictive too!
A good reminder Ruth – I’ve been trying to get more organised so I can really be “on” when Maggie is up and it does wonders I agree.
My one thing was rather huge. Built up over the past year. The garage tidy up. The entire year I was just like, “chuck it in the garage and I’ll sort it out later”. Yikes. It ended up looking like an episode of hoarders in there. So Friday I had a skip delivered, and the purge began! The kids were at their dads for the weekend which made the process so much easier. After 2 straight days of sorting, chucking and reorganisation…. I can actually fit my car in there! I seriously feel like a huge weight is lifted off me.
And thank you Beth for sharing your “one thing” strategy. It has changed my life xx
Well done…that’s amazing!
Washing the windows. I meant to do it before we had people over for Christmas lunch. That didn’t happen. Yesterday morning I did in my pyjamas. Done. I love my clean windows.
Clean windows are the actual best thing.
