One thing: The windows

Being the clean freak fruit loop that I am, I tend to attack the windows in the house every 6 months or so. Our windows are gorgeous, with lots of little window panes, but boy are they are a pain in the arse to clean.

With the shoot we had a week or so fast approaching, and a baby, and a case of “get a man in” if I want to get something done, I asked a local friend for the name of a window cleaner to come and do all the windows in our place. Of which there are HEAPS. Plus it could be my #onething.

For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.

So a few weeks back Mark came and had a look, gave me a quote and I promptly booked him on the spot to come. Mark arrived a few weeks later (he’s a busy man and I can see why). He stayed for 4 hours cleaning the inside and out of every window. I basically just sat and watched him at work, is there ANYTHING better than clean windows I ask you?

And after he left (and still a few weeks later) I exclaim to anyone near by (including Maggie) “LOOK AT THE WINDOWS! Look how sparkly they are!”. Pretty much everyone just ignores me. But honestly, sparkly windows are like crack to this overtired Mum.

Best money I’ve spent in a very long time.

What was your one thing this week?
What’s your window cleaning method? Squeegee? Newspaper? Outsource?
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…

Comments

  1. So a family friend from London taught me as a young girl that newspaper is the best for glass and mirrors, something to do with the ink? Mine could do with a clean now that you come to mention it!

  2. Frank seems to appreciate the clean windows too!
Does Mark have a brother in Brisbane who also cleans windows?
Ours are about eight meters up off the ground and have the added challenge of having bars on the outside (so the kids don’t tumble out).
And they haven’t been cleaned in years!
I am sure if we ever did get them cleaned it would mean that I could actually see the inside of my house and that would likely result in about ten more “one things”!

  3. Mark – Top notch window cleaner ! 🙂

They look great Beth ,I do mine with the steam cleaner thing ,not sure of its proper name but it does a good job!

  5. After Oscar’s week in ICU and me working full time last week my one thing was two things – vacuum the living room rug and mop the kitchen floor. I know I know, you do these things every week and I do normally vacuum about every second or third day but all had slipped by the wayside. God it felt good on Saturday arvo to walk on clean floors.

  6. Living in Dubai would kill you, Beth. Windows have to be cleaned regularly here with all the sand. Our building gets a man to abseil down and do them every month or so. But we have to do the balcony door ourselves. As we’re moving out at the end of the week and I’ve been busy doing other things I haven’t done it in ages and I can barely see out of it. It’s bugging me, but it’s so far down the priority list at the moment.
My car has to get washed once a week or it’s thick with sand, thankfully every shopping centre carpark has a guy who will hand wash the car for just a few dollars.

  7. Where do we find said “Mark?” I’m local to the Highlands so would love to know a great window cleaner….please ?

  8. My window cleaning method is a guy named Jim! As soon as the rainy season is over here in FL, he’ll be back. :-b

  9. My one thing was our blinds. They’re FILTHY. We didn’t realise how filthy when we bought the place and now it’s been 18 months and…yep. It’s time.

Here’s to clean blinds by the end of the week!

I perfectly understand you. I have Velux windows on the second floor of our house. They are absolutely beautiful and I like them a lot. The problem is cleaning them. Last year I had the crazy idea of hiring cleaners (http://carpetcleaningcatford.org.uk/) to clean the windows and since then I always do this. Sometimes not only for the windows :). I feel good and have more free time to spend with my kids. 🙂 Thanks for sharing! 🙂
