One thing: The car

Top of the to-do list since we knew we were having another kid was getting a bigger car. We had a standard 5 seater SUV thingy (Hyundai 135 for those wanting those kind of details) all I knew about that car was it was reliable, it did a LOT of km’s and that it disappointingly never had an outside temperature check feature. Whilst we could have squeezed another seat in the back between the girls, there are always friends, pick ups, dogs, stuff, and we knew we would have to upgrade.

Think that meant we got round to it? Nup. Sat there not getting done week after week, month after month until I had resigned myself to the fact that it wouldn’t happen before the baby came because really, it didn’t matter.

But this week we had a flurry of pre-baby activity completed. And the #one thing ended up being about #fourthings. For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.

Wednesday morning we headed into the local car dealership to have a look at what they had and left 2 hours later having signed contracts on a new car. We traded in the old car Friday morning, and drove away with a new one. TICK. We do manage to rush into most life decisions with heart first, head second, but in any case, that’s DONE. And I have a diesel car with outside temperature check…ESSENTIAL for a weather obsessed fruitcake like me.

I also managed to get my tax done this week which has been hanging over my head for months (as in I kept pushing it back week after week until it was actually months and you know what? It wasn’t that bad once I got started on it. And it never is.

Is there anything more awkward than sitting at a desk of a car dealership negotiating prices on a car?
What was your one thing this week?
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…

  1. Snap! Our one thing was a new car too. Headed out to buy birthday donuts yesterday and bought a car. Won’t pick up for two weeks but it’s been on the list since last November. X

Good morning 🙂 you can’t tell us you got a new car and not say which one – please can we know?

    • Can’t believe I forgot that bit! We got a Hyundai Sante Fe (the next size up from what we had before) I love it!

  3. Cars are totally my husband’s domain. He is in charge of all car related things and I don’t really care what happens as long as we have a car and it goes (actually, that’s a lie. I give him a list of features I want and he finds the cars that fit the bill).
My one thing this week was cleaning up the study/home office. It’s always been used as a bit of a dumping ground when cleaning up the rest of the house. It also joins onto our bedroom so will be where we put the bubba in her bassinet before sending her down the other end of the house to the nursery so it really needed to be sorted!! Nesting is hitting hard!! I went a bit mental with it, but so glad it’s done!

  4. I’m one of those weird people who loves to negotiate. So my husband looks at all the mechanically things and then I choose the prettiest one and proceed to screw them down as hard as I can 😉 I think it takes them by surprise.

We’re heart first head last sort of peeps too lol but just wanted to say snap! I’m a weather freak too hehe my Bff calls me Brian lol

Yay for a new car! More awkward than haggling I mean negotiating would have to be test driving at one dealership away from home then contacting your local dealership at home for a price and buying it from them. Not awkward I hear you say? No, but the call from the away dealership the following Monday was!!

good on you tick, tick. tickety tick by beth and co!
see kate’s had her baby! … amazing to see that soon after it happened!
the world is small now! a global village and we should all remember that!
jobs done … send love into the world! m:)X

  8. Well done, you won’t be sorry, and yes, I am one of those weird people….so come on, you have to tell us what you got. We downsized from a Landcruiser to a Prado and with 3 kids it is pretty squashy in that…or maybe I am just being a princess. ha ha ha. My one thing was cleaning the big stove top/oven in the station kitchen….2.5 solid hours of scrubbing….thank god it is done. Now, what about the royal baby, how exciting, a girl.

  9. Congrats on the new car. I too must know what you got?!?!
My one thing is completely clearing out all the junk and dust from the spare bedroom ready for our first au pair who arrived on Tursday! This room has been a dumping ground for ages. It contains 7yrs of kids artwork, a fitball, spare sheets and blankets, beanbags, 3 lamps and heaps of abandoned cushions! The room is cleared and clean. Today I get to dress it up!!!!!!!!

  10. I so need to have the car as our one thing priority, but so far it just keeps slipping to the bottom of the list. I must, I must, put it at the top of the list!!!!

  11. I’m so with you on this. Our third baby was TWO before we got around to it. We too got a 7-seater diesel and it’s the biz. Have the 7 seats almost daily.

But more importantly, I’m starting to get edgy about the impending birth. Can we have a bit of an overview of the plan? Will you let us know once he/she is here? Or when you’re in labour. Because as you know, we are ALL sitting on this egg with you.

  12. Carolyn says

I bought a new car too. Traded in the old one negotiated the price. Picked it up Wednesday!!

  13. About to have my fourth and will need a bigger car :(. What do people suggest…

  14. Trinity says

Four ‘one things’ for us today. The man cleaned out his shed- loooong overdue, even he had trouble finding stuff in there. He also fixed a pipe under the sink that had an intermittent leak.
I finally managed to get together with some old workmates to catch up. Matching diaries took militaristic planning!
And after that, I attacked the weeds in the front garden which have gone feral from all the rain we’ve had in Brisvegas in the last couple of months.

  15. i keep putting of my invoicing and I’m owed over $10k

  16. OMG, a new car is such fun! We bought a newbie October last year, and I’m still loving myself sick! And hello, what ever did you get, and what colour (yes I’m a girl, and it matters)?

  17. Good on you Beth!

I think I need to introduce husband to #onething. We have a list a mile long and a baby coming early september. We’ve talked alot about doing many things but as yet, have not actioned ANY of the things. It’s starting to stress me out because baby isn’t going to wait til we replace a few house stumps, or get a 2nd car or new oven or new front fence or even any nursery furniture (or many, many other things)! We haven’t even decided on a pram and I realised today after going to a shopping centre and being able to pick the brand of nearly every pram that walked past it’s just getting a bit ridiculous.

Hubby definitely needs to come on board with #onething!!

  18. Way to go! Just in the nick of time by the sound of it. I still haven’t traded my 5 seater for a 7 seater, and bub number 3 is one in 19 days…time goes by, kids put up with a baby seat between them.

  19. Lisa Mckenzie says

Good on you Beth ,I bought a new electric blanket and actually put it on the bed when I changed the sheets ,bought some gumboots and got my hair cut.
You will love your new car I don’t think it will be too long before we see your new bubba Xx
