The lazy co-sleeper: Week 2 Update

Sleep training is quite sucky isn’t it? I’m still trying to decide whether the hard yards I am putting in at the moment are worth the uncomfortable, but uninterrupted nights sleep I was having a few weeks ago.

So, how’s it all going?

We’re getting there. Slowly, but surely. In fact, she has slept in her bed, all night, by herself for the past FOUR nights. Count them. Four.

Last week we went back a few steps because she got sick. Again. Very high temperatures and vomiting  meant that the poor thing was out of sorts for 3 nights. But as soon as she was well enough, tough cop came back out to play. Poor, tired, tough cop.

The little bed on the floor is still being made up every night. Every night (including the past 4) she has trotted in, cried at the injustice of it all, reluctantly hopped into the bed and then about 2 minutes later asked to hop back into “my comfy bed”. So off we go, to get back tucked in, promises of stickers and rewards that will come, and after calling out approx 45 more times for a cuddle, or more blankey, less blankey, water or what our plans are for the next day, sleep eventually comes. It always does.

One day she might not ever come in at all right? Little people just seem to wake up so much in the night don’t they? Until then, I’ll make the little bed next to mine, walk her back, soothe her worries and hope for a good night’s sleep for all. Soon.

  1. Keep up the good work Beth. I’m sure it won’t be long before you don’t need the little bed next to yours and you have a full night of uninterrupted sleep nice and comfy in your bed. Jx

  2. Persevere. One day soon it will kick in completely and you’ll be so glad you did.

  3. You will turn the corner and look back on these trials as just that, a trial. Stella has been staying in her bed all night for the past two weeks, but taken to calling out on a whim for water, a cuddle, an update on the temperature, what was that noise, etc. Its slightly better than crawling into our bed but I have to hoist my lumbering sleepy self down the corridor a few times a night. Sigh.

  4. Well done you are doing so good!! I think this will be me in a year or so! we have a nearlly 1 year old and we ummmmmm still pat rock!!!i dont mind doing it cause shes a small kid but my back is killing me and small kids turn into big kids!oh and the difficulties of getting her to sleep at grandma’s argh!. I like the reward chart idea (will keep that stored in my memory bank) and the bed made next to mum & dads bed.x

  5. I truly admire your tenacity. Jasper just grew out of it at around 4. Grover? Still in our bed probably 3, maybe 4 nights a week. He’s 5. I’m just too tired to care anymore.

  6. I bet you are almost there. Keep going! If I were you I might say something in the next few days casually…” Oh gosh your bed is so comfy Harper. If I were you I wouldn’t want to get out of it at night….you’re very welcome to come and sleep next to us, but I don’t know why you would..I do believe this is THE comfiest bed in the house.” Maybe get Daisy in on it too with a couple of rolls around the bed….. May the force be with you!

  7. Keep going, you’re doing well! Soon she will realise it won’t be worth the effort to lay in your room and stay where she is in her bed. If it starts to fall apart, zip her into a sleeping bag with the zip at the back so she can’t undo it. I think Grobag make sleeping bags for older kids to wear to bed, it worked for me.

    V 🙂

  8. Great idea Krsi – and well done BabyMac for your perseverence.

  9. Great progress. Keep up the good work and I am sure the problem will resolve itself sooner than later. I like Krsi’s suggestion.

  10. I see what Harper’s getting at … I would want to sleep in your bed too – it’s the bed linen.

I have absolutely no advice – I’ve forgotten everything. But. Wish you well with the whole palava.

  11. The other night as Clint and I checked in on the girls before we went to bed, we chuckled at how well Lil sleeps now. Five years of her wakefulness and now she sleeps soundly, all night, in her own bed. This gives me hope that it will happen for the other two too. x
Good luck! I hope loooooong uninterrupted nights sleeps are heading your way. That to me is the true meaning of luxury! xx

  12. Look how many stickers are on that chart!
    I think you are winning!
It is ironic…or maybe just unfair…that fixing sleep problems so you can get more sleep often involves getting less sleep first. Thank goodness for coffee.

  13. You’re a better woman than me. P2 (nearly 3) is in our bed practically every night, despite having the most magnificent castle bed in the world. I’m too lazy to do anything about it, figuring she’ll stop in her own time.
    Best of Luck
    Mumabulous

  14. Perhaps introduce the “no talk” rule….ie you do the stuff in silence and don’t give her any verbal stimulation/responses in the getting her back into her bed phase?
Hard yards but worth it in the end:)

  15. Sounds like you’re doing really well lady, on the right track for sure, they just don’t realise how good lots of sleep is when they’re young. In a few years we’ll have to drag them out of bed xo

  16. nice blog
