A simple classic

We had one of those weekends that are very rare around here. Just us. Nowhere to be. Nowhere to go. Just here. Just us. It was sublime.

Friday night we had our friends over for some drinks and a chat around the fire while the kids played and went crazy all around us. It was my kind of Friday night. Easy. Relaxed and good fun. Saturday we spent all day in the garden. We finally put together the cubby house that we have been meaning to do since we moved in almost 9 months ago. We weeded. We pruned. We cut back. We mowed. We whipper snipped. It felt so good on Saturday night to collapse into bed, hands dirtied and cracked and the place looking great.

Sunday was an all time favourite of mine. Great weather. A lazy morning of boiled eggs and coffee (for me at least Rob went on a 40km bike ride). Mid morning I scoured a local vintage shop and picked up a fabulous bargain piece (more on that later in the week) then we had some more friends over for a lazy afternoon of eating and drinking.

A simple table setting. Daisy put this all together for me. She almost loves it as much as me – getting ready for visitors.

Some left over cheese from Friday night. I’m classy like that.

A piece of beef (standing rib roast) from our local butcher. It was too windy to cook on the fire pit though, which was a shame.

Some Bearnaise. Some spinach with toasted almonds. Some roasted chips.

Some home made raspberry and chocolate cake. The locals around here really know how to bake. I need to pick up my form in this area.

Once darkness hit, and the cold night rolled in, the neighbours left and the kids fell asleep Rob and I went outside to look at the stars. They bloody well twinkle here. We stood back, looked at our beautiful house and garden, and counted our blessings yet again. We truly are living the dream. Our dream. And this weekend was no exception.

  2. Hi Beth,
I am relatively new to reading your blog but I just wanted to say that I absolutely love it. You have re-ignited my love for food and also the niggling aspirations to move from our current home by the beach to the country. Keep up the good work.

  4. Hi Beth,
OMG, sounds divine. That for me is also the perfect weekend. I have been indoors, unwell all weekend and now after reading your blog feel motivated to go out and water my newly planted standard maples. Its nature and food that really grounds and makes us know how lucky we are to be alive.
    Cheers GTV
