One Thing: The Fairy Garden

I was reminded this week of these posts that I used to do on the blog all the time….I just checked and my last one was in 2019 so you might say, I had forgotten about them. Right now the idea of getting just one thing done seems about right. Most of us are stressed, overwhelmed and barely coping with the basics of life at the moment at home  so let’s resurrect this and see how we go. You never know, it might make us feel better!

For those of you new to this, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things.

So what made the cut this week you ask? THE FAIRY GARDEN. You might remember that Mum made this for Maggie for her 5th Birthday and while she is now 6.5 I can say that the love affair with fairies remains as strong as ever. Life got in the way and the fairy garden has been looking like this for the past 6 months. Sums up 2020/21 don’t you think?

But the other day when I was at the fruit shop I got some new pots of colour and today I thought we all needed a boost that comes from gardening so we attacked it. Cleared out all the dead plants, added in the new…

And then came the fun part which was adding back in all the fairies. Even the year 6 kid was enjoying it, but don’t say it out loud ok?

A good water and we are back in fairy business and we now have a fun distraction from home school for one year 1 kid who loses interest pretty fast! We have collected all these bits and pieces from Etsy over the past year (like the fences and stepping stones) – have a search on there and see what you can find. From memory Steph’s Fairy in Bondi is quite good and fast but there are lots there. We split some of the normal coloured potted colour with some succulents and rocks and it looks so good.

I think they will be happy.

I suppose the main lesson for me here as well as the reminder has been that we put stuff off for so long, too hard basket. We put up with things when sometimes just tackling them might be he easier option. It reminds me of this quote I saw a very long time now that always sticks in my head….

“Remove the rock from your shoe rather than learn to limp comfortably”

If only I took my own advice. So many of us do this in all areas of our lives. Take the rock out you guys, it might be easier (or cheaper!) than you think.

What was your one thing this week?
Got a task that has been put off SO much you think it’s actually harder and bigger than it actually is?
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…

  1. What a lovely reminder and a fantastic lockdown activity. Xx

  2. I’ve always loved your one things! Its been my mantra this lockdown. If I achieve one thing for the day, then I’m good. This week was painting the front gate.
    Fairy garden looks magical!

  3. A fairy garden wasn’t on my list, but looking at that I think making one should be.
I’m not sure what my thing will be but it’s something I’m going to think about and do.
    Cheers Kate

  4. I always loved your “one thing” adventures!! Fairy garden update looking amazing!!

  5. Fabulous analogy. I’m a limper from way back, but the older I get the more I realise it’s not a great quality- at best martyr, at worst counterproductive and undermining of myself and others (generally women).

Thanks for the reminder. Watch out world, the rock is out!

  6. Aww…thanks for the uplifting post. Here in the southern US, things are looking bleak….we are buying new masks and giving up the few outings we had finally started enjoying. The delta variant is going wild. I’m thinking of putting together a little fairy garden of my own — just to look at it and smile.

  7. Lovely post. Glad you’ve resurrected the #onething I’m about to redo my backyard. And next will be the kitchen. These are big things but I did start with the lightbulbs 😂

I took absolutely everything off my ceaserstone kitchen bench tops and used the sample cream cleanser I got for free off the Ceaserstone website last year and cleaned the whole lot following their instructions. They are shining and a big tick off my one thing list!
