Holiday savour: how to make slime (that works)

You know making slime was really popular about 18 months ago? Well we made it for the first time 2 weeks ago and that’s because I said no approximately 8356 times before deciding I would do it. I couldn’t cope with one more tube of toothpaste being wasted, or batches of weird shit on the bench, we were going to do it and do it properly and then it would be done and hopefully no one would ask me again. Plus…craft. You know how I feel about that. It’s up there with the park.

I had no time for videos (Daise had watched them all anyway) and told me about activators and borax and then I stopped listening. I googled but there were 1 billion variations, and as I said, I just wanted the whole thing over and done with. We tried one batch that was shit (took me about 4 different shops and $30) and I was about to give up when I remembered that I saw Phoodie who I follow on Instagram make it. She had a recipe that worked, I can follow recipes and so we had a crack and you know what? SUCCESS.

Everyone was happy, especially me because no one has asked me to make it again. That’s a success in my book. And two weeks later it is still working, and thick and working like it should be.

Obviously you can’t eat this slime (I have put in recipe form for instructions only)

Homemade slime

2 bottles Elmer’s glue (we used glitter) but you could use plain and add food colouring & glitter
1 teaspoon bi carb soda dissolved in
1 cup warm water
Contact Lens solution (squirt until thickens)

You’ll need:

We used 2 bottles of this.

And this contact lens solution (you can get both from Woolies)

1. Dissolve the bi carb in the warm water mixing with a spoon

2. Squeeze the glue into a large mixing bowl and add in the water mixture and give it a stir

3. Start to squirt in the contact lens solution until it starts to thicken (keep mixing until it comes off the spatula and bowl

4. Take it into your hands and mix and stretch like dough until it doesn’t stick and works and looks like slime should (your kids will know when this is but I reckon 10 mins)

And then…you will have slime. And you can send them off to do whatever it is they do with it, and get about 4 minutes of glory for being a good Mum. My kids are still thanking me because I finally said yes. Only took me 18 months. Ha!

How’s your school holidays going?
Don’t ask me, it’s not been a good week.
Is slime still a thing for you guys or are we basically 1987 down here?

Comments

  1. I too said no for ages and then finally caved, thinking they’d never ask again. They still bloody ask!!

PS: we used the same recipe as you.

  2. Slime happened here last week. The girl and her pal did it, I looked away. Kept the girl, the lad and their two mates very happy. I didn’t need to go shopping for ingredients. It was a success! They might hold off asking to make it again for a while now!!

  3. Thank fuck my household is too old for slime! Good job, mama 🙂

Been a wet, boring holidays here but my girl is off on school tour tomorrow so yay for that.

  4. My partner’s daughter made it at our house when I was away. They used a different recipe which required liquid washing detergent, They used my special silk washing liquid -about $30 for 500ml! Not happy Jan.

  5. Saving for Christmas holidays……

  6. Sorry Beth, that won’t be the last of it! Now they know how easy it is, they will want more! Once my daughter knew how to make it, that was it. Whenever she has a friend over, all they want to do is make slime! Her school teacher has actually banned the word in class (I think she got sick of the kids only ever bringing their homemade slime in for news).
Next it will be “I don’t have purple slime”, or “I want to try fluffy slime”. Good luck!
Oh, and in case you ever need to know, vinegar dissolves slime 🙂

  7. Great work, and like Mel G, I’m delighted we’re definitely too old for slime! I can remember finding bits of play doh all over the house many years ago and the last onslaught was 2.5 years ago when copious amounts of glitter were used to make props at our house for a school drama production. I saw a couple of flecks of that glitter in my bedroom just the other day 😂. She’s at uni now and the challenges are different…

  8. You’re a bloody legend. Is there anything you haven’t blogged? 😘

  9. I do not know if it’s just me or if perhaps everyone else experiencing issues with your website. It appears as if some of the written text within your posts are running off the screen. Can someone else please provide feedback and let me know if this is happening to them as well? This could be a problem with my browser because I’ve had this happen previously. Thank you|
