Full Maggie Update: 2 years, 3 months

Oh hey there girlfriend.

This just about sums up Miss Maggie Macdonald at just over 2. Hands in pockets, because that’s what she likes to do. Feet placed just so, because that what she likes to do. 2 years and 3 months, I will do why I like to do and not much else. This includes sleeping (or not), eating (or not), drinking as much milk or baby cinos and milkshakes as I like (and not much else), you get the idea.

It’s been a big month or so for Maggie with school holidays which is always a time to shine with her sisters. All that attention. She LOVES it. So do I!

Whilst Daisy will always be her go-to (they are like soul sisters those two) Harper has been making more of an effort to get involved and the fights that are usually between the two of them a little less. Whilst travel was good, home is better. She missed Frank.

Daytime sleeps are often being refused (I am unsure how I am meant to get ANYTHING done anymore?!) but there are these wonderful moments in the morning sunshine where she plays so beautifully by herself making serious games with babies and cooking and putting babies to sleep that I can’t do anything but sit and watch her and marvel at the wonder of a 2 year old.

I do wonder what her little mind thinks.

She’s very bossy, demanding her own haircuts while I am there to get mine.

Or her own drink if I dare to have one.

She’s mostly sleeping at night (wakes briefly and usually goes back down after a tuck in). She’s still in her cot, still getting a bottle, still in love with her dummy and still winning over anyone she meets with a little smile that lights up a whole room/house/world and still waiting for me to fill out that form for daycare.

She’s busy exploring the world and finding her own little place in it and I can’t wait to see what’s just around the corner…

Do you have a little one around this age too?
What are they up to?
Ruling the roost like Maggie?

  1. there are no little ones at our house any more only a moody 14 year old girl. Even my youngest niece is going to start school next year. I have to get my little sprout fix from the updates & photos of your gorgeous Maggie

  2. She’s a treasure Beth. As an Early Childhood Teacher with nearly 40 years’ experience, may I share a few thoughts with you? Don’t be in a rush to send her to day care. Don’t for one second feel guilty that you’re not taking her to a centre when it seems that’s the “right thing to do”. If you’re in a position to keep her at home with you before Preschool then DO IT. No one will ever know her as well as you and Rob do and everything you think she needs to know in these early years is being taught to her by being in the secure circle of her family. She’s learning to socialise within your large, extended family – look at what Archie, Dot and those lovely big sisters are teaching her about being with others! Her language skills are getting a workout. (Lordy, can little people talk!) Her physical development is being taken care of by her access to the beautiful surrounds you have and by the activities you engage in with her inside. Her cognitive development is more than catered for as she explores her world and is given the time to process what she’s learning and emotionally, you’re setting her up to be resilient and confident because she’s moving and living in the security of those who know and love her best. You’re all her safety net. I know she’s busy and you need a few moments to collect your own thoughts, but as you say, these days just fly by. Soon she’ll be off to big school with the other girls and you’ll wonder where those days all went. Don’t blink. It’ll be gone in an instant. 🙂

    • Janey,
      What a beautiful comment.
Beth- you have such lovely readers!

    • What a lovely comment. I totally agree that the time flies, especially when you are so busy with the older ones. I also have three girls- 12, 10 & 5. My baby is now a big girl at school and I miss those lovely days with just the two of us.

    • Beautifully said. You know how quickly time goes. My baby has turned 18 today, no more little girls here, only adults. I miss the old relationship but am excited by the next phase too.

    • Beautiful comment and oh so true. Please take it from someone whose kids have all left home. It is horrible. My kids are 28, 26 and 22. I am excited with what they are achieving and excited to see what they do next but honestly, the times goes so fast. Enjoy the time you have with your beautiful little angel. I even look for your posts as Maggie warms my heart as well. Your girls are just gorgeous and WOW, look at Daisy, so grown up. X

    • Janey thank you SO much for such a thoughtful and insightful comment, I truly appreciate it x

  3. Susan, Mum to Molly says

I so love that you’re willing to share her with all of us – thank you Beth.

My baby, also a youngest of three girls, is almost nine and we still get the paints & playdough out each scholidays – even Ms Teen still joins in. <3

So I'm a mum of older ones who also says: cherish every moment, and if your gut says no daycare yet then go with that. You'll know when the time is right…

And yes, the youngest of three girls is by definition more feisty and more bossy! "Though she be but little, she is fierce." My youngest girl is also the only redhead, so she takes it next level. 🙂

  4. Your Maggie posts resonate with me, I have two girls, 9 and 10 and a two year old boy. He too has a go to sister who is his best friend, apart from mummy which he tells me often.
Having two children in quick succession I don’t think I got to soak it all in as much. This time round I’m enjoying every day. Having a little one around is such fun, although at times challenging ?

  5. I also have a 2 year old and 2 big girls (9and 11). Edie is in heaven in the holidays and now she will often ask me “go get big girls?” at about 11 am and I have to tell her they can’t come home from school yet. She goes to a family daycare which is so perfect for her. She is an adventurer and collector of new friends so most mornings she asks if we can go to her daycare and if that is a no she just packs her bag anyway and asks for my car keys!! She is heaven – I just adore having her around, I have enjoyed her baby years so much, it is definitely a lot easier that when the other two were little…I also enjoyed them but didn’t have the time or experience to relax into it!

  6. I forgot to say that my little one used to say at that age: “all my by self”! Pretty much sums them up ?

  7. Rebecca Freestun Astier says

My gorgeous Chloe turned two last week!! Bossy, head strong and great sense of humour. Her oldest brother Lucas (12) is wrapped around her finger, her five year old brother and she often fight but lately have started playing together in odd moments and making each other laugh. That giggling, just divine. And she is finally starting to be nice to her baby brother Oliver. He is just 5 months old and a complete surprise for us – but mostly for Chloe who thought she had the deal sorted in regards to hogging the attention being the only girl and until her arrived, the youngest. It’s such a busy emotional time with a two year old and all these kids under one roof (and working!!) but trying to stay in the moment and soak it all up. I love following your Maggie updates as our daughters are so close…keep them coming! X

  8. I have a little one just one month shy of turning two. Every time you post an update about Maggie I constantly nod yes as I read. My Harriet indeed rules the roost here and will boss her big sister around non-stop. All she needs to do is flash her cute little smile and she is no longer in trouble.

  9. Oh beth!
She is one adorable child of the universe!
I think for creativity, free play is the best because as soon as they are in organized care they loose that original thought!
Just observing people i have taught to be creative!
    Much love m x
