One thing: the old chest of drawers

Last week in the super cell of “getting shit done” I was on a ROLL. Found myself getting through so many annoying #onething jobs that I was pretty much looking for more just because I knew I would get them done! You guys will be happy to know that I also dropped off EVERY bag of goods to various donations…they are no longer in the boot of the car. A Christmas miracle in itself!

For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.

Maggie’s (new) room doesn’t have built in wardrobes like Harper and Daisy have so they came with an inherited chest of drawers that I think I got when I was about 18 or so myself. Nothing fancy, just a good old trusty pine number, but they have moved from house to house and with us over the years and with each passing year I think they have lost pretty much all their handles.

They looked like this:

Each and every handle fallen off, or worse still, left with a screw in it so you had to pull them out from either the sides of the drawers or by those awful screws. And I was OK with that. For like, 10 years. Maybe more.

But not last week. OH NO YOU DITN’T. I wouldn’t have it. Not for Mags. Not on my watch.

I went to my friend Zoe’s shop and picked up 12 new ceramic handles. In like 10 minutes. And then came home and put them on in about the same amount of time.  Why did I wait so long Beth? WHY?

But now we have handles! And cute ones at that! And I can open and close them with ease and admire how cute they look too.

20 minutes.
10 years.

It’s OK, I can’t work out the logic either. And maybe one day I will paint the drawers too to give them another lease of life. But that can wait a few years now can’t it….?!

What was your one thing this week?
Anyone else have to open drawers from the sides or from tiny screws sticking out?
I wonder how long this super cell will last for?
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting.

  1. You chose so well!!!! Miss Maggie’s room is looking splendid.

And that little hot pink dressy….. she slays me with her sweetness every time.

  2. Love the handles! Have you anchored the chest to the wall incase Miss Maggie decides to climb? Please push to the top of your list of one-thing if not =)

  3. Washed that car seat covers, first time in over a year! They dried in like 10 mins. Why did I not know this!!! Pram is next! #onething

  4. Love the ceramic handles. Funny coincidence because I explored a shop in our new home town and found the same handles. Got all excited about what I was going to use them for but the thought has completely gone out of my brain. Gone! No idea what I thought I might use them for. *it happens frighteningly often*

LOL, reading your blog tonight reminded me of Tim Urban’s TED talk called “Inside the mind of a master procrastinator”. If you have never watched it, it is well worth a laugh. I feel your pain!

  6. We have those handles on Gen’s chest of drawers – which was an excellent footpath score when she was but a tiny tot. It too could do with a new coat of paint, but the handles are most excellent.
I’ve been doing the minimalist game all February, where on Day One you chuck, give away, whatever, one item, Day 2 =2 etc. I am nowhere near minimalist and the house is still cluttered but boy have we chucked out some absolute rubbish, and sorted through all sorts of spaces that have been a nightmare. The kitchen drawers, the bathroom toy basket, the kids t-shirt drawers – the list goes on. Al got into the 4 drawer filing cabinet on the weekend – it is now useful again!
The next “one thing” is getting the couches cleaned – apparently there are people who come and clean them for you, and boy, after 8 years ours are no longer near their original fabulous red leather!

  7. As soon as I read this post, I researched a new dentist and made an appointment. Been putting it off WAY too long. Thanks Beth!

  8. that looks great beth!

    lolm:)X

  9. Got car washed (ok dog spewed in it during a trip) and am all set for my BIG March clean up where I blitz house/garage/workshop on my weekend off. You are inspiring, or perhaps better still super motivating me!
As for those pretty ceramic handles, why didn’t you just ask, I have had my dozen of fancy Moroccan handles for 20+ yrs … that I still haven’t put on my pine chest of drawers (said chest of drawers now in garage awaiting a new home in March)…I’ll pop the handles on Gumtree…

  10. so satisfying.

My garden is dead so I should probably fix that.

    Nice spode dish x

We have been thinking about a new kitchen for about 10 years.

Last week I finally went into an actual kitchen company to make enquiries…

Totally did my head in. Back in the too-hard basket it goes.
