Holiday reading

Ahhhhh….holidays. The only time of the year that I actually read. Holiday Beth is in situ and everyone (including myself) is thrilled that’s she’s here. It’s a shame but it’s true that the only time I actually open a book these days is when I’m on holiday. Something happens to my brain when I am on holidays that allows me to open a book and then DEVOUR them.

So this week up at the farm I have a few that I have brought with me. Let’s take a look at the pile I have to get through. And this time, controversially, I have added in a Kindle which is what I have started with. I never thought I would like reading from a device, but here I am loving the fact that I can read it in bed with a baby in the room without having to turn a light on, it’s light and easy to read laying down or sitting up. I could be converted!

On the Kindle…Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

I am really enjoying this read which is kind of a self-help but not really, that talks about being creative and tapping into that side of your self. I’m about half way through between baby and kid duties after a few days which I’m pretty happy with.

Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

I got this for Rob for Christmas because I wanted to read it too. Have heard good things about it so know it will be an easy and enjoyable read. Perfect for holidays!

China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan

I absolutely loved Crazy Rich Asians which I read last holidays. It was funny and smart and silly and something you can power through. Looking forward to this sequel.

Season of Salt & Honey by Hannah Tunnicliffe

My friend Hannah wrote this book this year and even though I got a copy a gazillion years ago for Mothers Day I think? I’m still yet to read it. Watch this space!

So tell me what’s on your reading list?
Or what’s one thing that I NEED to add into mine before School goes back and my mind shuts down?
Do you read on a Kindle too? I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying it!

  1. Hi Beth

I have a Kindle and I love it for the same reasons as you. No need for a light and can read in bed with husband asleep, but I also love the feel of books too.

I have just finished The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (aka J K Rowling) which was excellent. I am about to start the next one. I have also read After You by Jojo Moyes which was the sequel to Me Before You. OK, not rave reviews from me. Highly recommend The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George.

I wasn’t that crazy about Crazy Rich Asians although I did read it on your recommendation. I will buy Hannah’s book, it sounds good.

    Have a lovely break.

  2. I have a bunch of ebooks I want to read. What type of kindle do you have? There are a few books on your list I want to read.
Right now I’m reading a cookbook! Nigel Slater’s kitchen diaries 3. I love his writing.

  3. I am loving having time to read while in the van. I bought with me The Lucy Family Alphabet wiki have is funny! Room, a book is never normally read but someone passed on to me so I thought why not? And another one called The Book of Speculation that I borrowed from a friends bookshelf. Having no TV, no Facebook ( I deactivated at the start of December) & logging out of Instagram a week ago means I’m picking up a book instead of my phone ( except now because I still love reading blogs) is soooooo great.
Enjoy the farm & holiday Beth X

  4. Yet to get sucked into kindle but I guess I should never say never.

As for books, highly recommend Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies and The Husband’s Secret — two of my favourite books this year. Apart from that, Favel Parrett’s Past the Shallows and When the night comes are great reads too.

    • They are some of my favourites this year too! But the very best book I read this year has to be The Light Between Oceans- aaaaaaaamazing!! Have you read it? If not out it on your list immediately!!!

      • I just read that too. It’s kind of mesmerising. An Australian voice, beautifully captured.
Although I really bought it because I loved the cover!

      • I’ve got that sitting on my bookshelf! Must read it.

      • Agree Reannon, I read The Light Between The Oceans ealier this year and just could not put it down. Set me thinking what I would have done in their situation. Looking forward to the movie supposedly due for release in 2016.

        • A movie! Really?!!! God I hope they do it justice. After I finished reading it I did not read a book for another two months. It just would not let me go. A top 5 book of all time for sure 🙂

          • I have just bought this on my kindle after reading your comments ladies… going on holiday for a week and a half camping tomorrow and with a new bubba (5 months) around lately i havent been able to read! So glad I came and read this post as I have got a couple of great books to now read 🙂

  5. Im in Sydney at my Mum’s with the kids for a few weeks and for the first time since last year opened a book and actually read it! It was Girl on the Train. OMG. Couldn’t put it down! Enjoy! I think I need to read Crazy Rich Asians, it sounds like fun.

  6. Im currently reading (on my beloved mini iPad) “A Little Life” by Hanya Yanagihara. I’m thoroughly enjoying it. The story & writing is brilliant. For a shorter (A Little Life is a big book) read, I’d recommend “The White Tiger” by Aravind Adiga, a tongue-in-cheek view of Indian life.

  7. Ooh I’ve been hearing good things about Big Magic. I enjoyed Elizabeth Gilbert’s last book The Signature of All Things. No kindle for me yet, I’m so very old fashioned with technology. I have the most delicious book on my bedside table that is almost too good to read. Kate Mortons new one The Lake House. It’s been several years since a new book from local Brisbane writer Kate and I know I will experience grief when its over. She writes gorgeous mystery stories that weave in the past and present, there’s always a shocking secret to reveal. She’s been described as Enid Blyton for adults, and I totally agree.

  8. I have a Kindle, I never thought I’d get one, because I love reading REAL books, that I can touch, and flick through and read the blurb and look at the front cover and do all those things that you do with a book. But then I won a gift voucher to Officeworks and I decided to buy a Kindle and I love it! I love that it’s easy to read when you’re in bed and your hubby doesn’t want the light on, disturbing him. I love that I can buy ebooks for a ridiculously cheap price, decent titles too. I also read on my iPad but hands down a book will always be my one true love.

I’m currently reading The Lightkeeper’s Wife by Karen Viggers and The Monk Who Sold his Ferrari by Robin Sharma. I’ve read The Girl on the Train and if you like that, try The Good Girl by Mary Kubica, also Pretty Baby. For something more thought-provoking, I loved reading Eye of the Sheep by Sophie Laguna (I think that’s the author.) I also loved The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan.

  9. I travel a lot for work. I live in a regional area and that means long, long drives to my two workplaces. What I discovered about 18 months ago were audio books. Whoa! Why didn’t I ever know about these before?. I get them for free from my library and no longer feel frustrated on my long drives and consumed by thoughts along the lines of “what a waste of time this is!! Arrrggghhh” I’ve become a bit of an audio book advocate as so few people seem to access them. Now my long drives to work are full of people reading to me. I find I get through a book a week, and it has the added bonus of keeping me alert while I’m on a long drive on a country road.

    • Agree Kimberly, when we go on long road trips we always get audio books from our local library, makes the journey so much more enjoyable and there are some fabulous books to listen to. Have you listened to ‘A House in Fez’? Very funny! We find we don’t want to get out of car when we reach our destination as we want to sit and listen to the next chapter of whatever book we are listening to!

  10. I love the sound of Holiday Beth! Enjoy your reading at the farm! I am reading Leila’s Secret…. and have been for quite some time, need to pick it up again but Mr Chardy and I are hooked on Nashville at the mo – we’ve nearly rolled season 2. Binge watching and perfect rainy weather for it too. Have a great holiday.

  11. I’m reading storm sister by lucinda Riley. It’s the second in the series but you don’t need to read the first one first as each book is about a different sister. The first one “seven sisters” was fantastic. Big, fat, juicy book you can’t put down.

  12. If you love The Girl On The Train, try “The Husbands Secret” by Liane Moriarty! I just finished it. Great for discussion.
