One Thing: Dodgy blinds

You know when something is broken and you can live with it because it’s only a little bit broken and you can still make it work even though it’s not working to its full potential? I have had plenty of those half broken things around the house…a door that needs to be pushed a certain way to shut properly. A washing machine that gets stuck on a certain cycle but if you just flick it to the next it will work? The kind of things that if you had to create a owners manual for your home, you’d mention. The kind of thing that gets added to your #onething list.

For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.

Well I have plenty of those things around the place, such as the blinds in all our bedrooms.

Coming up to about 10 years old, the roman fold down block out blinds are on their last legs…they are all a bit finicky the way they work and if you don’t pull the cord at the correct angle they don’t go up or down, you know the thing?

But this week Daisy’s bedroom really broke. As in the cord came out of the runner track thingy and only goes up one side. It looks a bit like this now:

It was enough to make me finally call the blind man who came out, measured up and gave me a quote (gulp). What I have put up with for the past 4 or so years was sorted with a phone call, a 15 minute visit and hopefully an install in a few more weeks time. I tell you what, this home maintenance stuff never ends does it? Like painting the harbour bridge…round and round we go.

I also managed to drop all the things off to Vinnies from last week’s angry kitchen clean. The garage? Still filled with all the rubbish for the tip. That might happen this week.

What was your one thing this week?
What’s on your quirky if it ain’t all the way broke then don’t fix it list?
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…

Comments

  1. We ordered blinds! 6 months in our new house that had no blinds in the living room at the front of the house. When hubby cut out my “privacy tree” it had to be done! Now just have to remember to not walk around naked until they are in 3 weeks.

  2. My #onething this week Beth, was to make a #onething list ! And I even managed to cross something off – I removed everything from the walk in pantry, cleaned all the shelves, threw out anything that was out of date (cumin that expired in 1997 – that was a bit scary) and reorganised it. Its amazing how good I felt after, there may be something in this #onething thing 😉

    • There IS something in it Lisa…I’m sure! I’ve managed to tick off so many annoying things…just one a week isn’t so overwhelming.

  3. Oh god, we have a dodgy blind too – it came off the wall about 6 months ago and it was sitting on our mantelpiece, driving me crazy! Took about 10 minutes to fix it. But now it still doesn’t work really well, and I want roller blinds so I need to order some samples!!

Good on you Beth, my one thing this week was to clean out the rest of the kitchen and the hutch in the kitchen cupboards and drawers as well.

  5. This is an awesome way to stay on top of things that is usually not on the to do list! Thanks for the tip.

I will have to think about what to do first. LOL

  6. You inspired me Beth – I wrote my list last night and after trawling through a few of your older posts finally got my 8 month olds passport pic taken ready for a trip in Oct. It’s a start!!

  7. It’s my first comment here but I couldn’t not write! I always thought I’m “to do” list maniac, but I never heard of #onething, so now i have no choice but to create one. It’s great idea, so I hope I’ll be able to share my onething next week 😀 Thanks for motivation!

  8. Hi Beth,

I think it looks very well. Thanks for sharing such a great tip for us.

    Cheers!
