One thing: the garage and its door

Whilst my #onething this week should be shaving my legs which I just did (and you don’t want to know how long ago the last time was) I figured that wouldn’t be the most interesting thing and at this very late stage of the pregnancy we did not need photos of that. For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.

So instead I will turn my attention to the absolute FRENZY of activity that has occurred around these parts this week. Rob has been nesting, I have been nesting, anyone would think that the house was about to go on the market with the cleaning and polishing and fixing and trimming that has occurred. And all for a baby that will never even know or care less about those clean windows. We have:

  • mowed & whipper snipped the lawns (by push mower nonetheless which is a big feat given the size of our yard). It looks SO good.
  • Cleaned the windows
  • Washed all the baby clothes and our away all baby stuff ready to go
  • Purchased the last things required for the baby: change table mattress, wraps, bottles, dummies, you know all the stuff that we threw away about 6 months before I got knocked up
  • Cleaned the fire place out (?)
  • Pruned the hydrangeas
  • Washed and polished the old car to within an inch of its life
  • De-cobwebbed the main living room
  • Cleaned the top of the range hood (?)

And about a million other little things in between. But one that stood out for me was the 6 monthly clean out of the garage.

You see we manage to do a good clean out every 6 months (usually much longer) emptying out all the empty cardboard boxes that come in the mail, general mess and try to re-order things. I also took things to the next level and had the electronic door fixed that had been broken for, you know, 2 years or so. I got onto yellow pages, called and made an appointment, and had it fixed all within a few days. WHY do we wait for these things?!

So now there is order restored (holy shit I have a lot of girls clothes ready to go if this baby is a girl).

A beautiful stack of wood ready for the first few months of winter including tubs of kindling meaning I won’t have to collect or chop any for the LONGEST time. Yesssss.

Rob’s camping stuff in boxes marked as such, just general garage organisation PLUS we could totally park a car in there if we needed to. Huh.

I tell you what, it’s worth getting knocked up just for the amount of productivity that has occurred this week. My older sister is in the process of getting her house on the market for sale and she has FINALLY got around to getting things fixed around the house: the spare toilet, replacing some tiles in the bathroom, getting a new vanity, you know just the general stuff that we put off. And when she got round to it, and realised it took less effort and money than she thought, she couldn’t help but wonder WHY she had left it for so long…

What was your one thing this week?
Maybe mine next week will be having a baby?!
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…

  1. Wow that’s a real frenzy of activity. I feel tired just reading it. Two years ago before I put my house up for sale I attended to heaps of those niggling things that had been on my To Do List for years. It didn’t take as much effort as I thought it would and the house looked great – I only wish I had done them earlier so I could’ve actually enjoyed them myself.

  2. now when the baby arrives! … perhaps by stork!;)
you will be so chuffed that you got so many jobs out of the way! … you can relax more and enjoy some quality time with bub!
it sounds like this baby will appear miraculously!
hope you are having a lovely day! love m:)X

  3. Does washing half of the car count? Lol

  4. Shaving legs needs to be on my list. Maybe after the winter…lol.

My one thing was to finally pull out the lounge, with the help of Mr D (it’s a big lounge), vacuum it and behind it. The spiders arrive in the summer and have a lovely time constructing webs for themselves and their family in the spots I can’t get to easily….oh joy! The spiders are all gone now however the evidence remains. Well it did. All gone!

    Happy Mother’s Day! Mrs D x

  5. A couple of jobs this week for us- finally installed the lights over our kitchen bench- we finished the reno over a year ago, and only just getting around to hanging the wonderful old warehouse lights we had packed away for the kitchen. It took two days of tricky measuring and hanging the frame and lights from a high ceiling, but so worth it to see them in.
And varnishing a gate which was a bit the worse for wear after all the rain we’ve had. Another one off the list-tick!
    Happy nesting to you!

  6. Mine is to get a new suitcase for my trip to Sydney… YAY! Wish you were going to be there too, but I understand there’s the small case of having a baby and all. x

  7. Hi Beth, your sis is right – fixing things waaay before you plan to sell a house makes much more sense. I’ve just done it and man what a pain in the bum. Your ‘just one thing’ motto on maintenance weekly is the bomb for this type of procrastination!! Go Beth you clever gal 😉
