What cha readin’?

Because I do something once, or rarely, but am an instant expert on the matter, I thought I’d share what I’ve been reading. Because I read! I actually read a book. But I didn’t really read it, so much as DEVOUR it. I put a call out on Facebook when I was at the library last week and I had loads of people say read this. They didn’t have it at the library, but they did have it on the cheap at the airport bookshop so it’s now mine to keep and beg others I know to read it.

Book 1

Now if you haven’t read it, then just go and read it and tell me what you think. If you have, TELL ME ALL ABOUT IT. What did you think? Love? Hate? Indifferent? I was a huge fan, mostly just because it grabs you and you can’t stop thinking about it as well as working out how quickly you can pick it up to start reading it again. I finished it over about 2 days, put it down and begged Rob to start to read it. He did and then didn’t talk for the next day while he finished it.

It’s good. I liked it.

Now tell me, what should I read next? To, you know, keep the reading juices flowing? Somehow I don’t think I’ll be picking up Hemingway which is sitting on Rob’s bedside table..

  1. yes! such a good book. I’m not a huge reader of books persay, but I LOVED this book. So twisted. It’s making me want to go read it again. I have heard its going to be made into a movie. Ben Affleck to be Nick and Rosalind Pike (who?) to be Amy. I hope that they don’t f’ it up!!!

I saw that she was writing a screen play for it…hope they don’t stuff it up. Ben Affleck is PERFECT, and I just googled that bird and she looks spot on!

      • yeah I googled too, she was in a bond movie… I remember her now. Neil Patrick Harris is rumoured too I think as the ex boyfriend who helps her after she is sprung.

  2. LOVED this book! So not my usual girly fluffy shit – not normally a fan of thrillery, crimey things but this had a cool edge to it yuh?? I bought Angry Housewives Eating Bon-bons for $3 from Vinnies recently – SO AWESOME!!!! xo

  3. Loved it too. Try “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. It’s a true story but absolutely fabulous girl adventure story. Equal page turner to Gone Girl.

Thank you, was despairing all afternoon about the lack of television viewing this evening, with no new book releases from my favourite authors. Have just downloaded it and now rushing children to bedtime. Yay!

I just read “The Husband’s Secret” by Liane Moriarty. I couldn’t put it down, & thought about it for days after I finished it. Loved it!

  6. I have read it and I did like it but I found it hugely disappointing as well. It’s one of those books that could have been SO GOOD but missed the mark for me.

A book I recently read that I adored was “The Rosie Project” – love. And I’m in the middle of reading Stephen King’s “On Writing” for the fifty millionth time and loving it even more. x

    HI Beth,

I am new to your blog and loving it (thank-you).

And this is a perfectly timed post for me as I am looking for holiday reading for a trip to FNQ next month.

I loved the Larsson The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. A wonderful thriller/crime trilogy. I’m wondering if I liked those I might like this….

    x

The last book I read was The Rosie Project and whipped through it in a couple of days, loved it so much. I’m always on the look out for the next book to read, I think I’ll give this one a go.

I was JUST thinking about doing a post on what cha readin? But instead I’ll stalk yours! In anticipation for our own winter escape to the north…
I have just re-read The Dressmaker by Rosalie Ham, I studied it in year 12 literature (yes spring chicken, class of ’04, what of it) and forgot how intriguing it is… It’s also being made into a movie this year so get on it then you can be all like ‘oh I read that yeeeeaaars ago’
Also The Light Between Two Oceans my ML Stedman, great read, I read it whilst traveling in WA, last year I had a thing about reading books whilst traveling in certain areas, a lot of Tim Winton down the WA coast, We of the Never Never through the Territory and Kings in Grass Castles through the Kimberley. Makes it like reading on steroids ๐Ÿ™‚ Now I’m off to add to my holiday reading list…

Paris by Edward Rutherfurd. Haven’t read much of his lately – loved London but couldn’t get into the others (Russka, Sarum), although heard New York is great which you might like Beth (bring back memories). If you haven’t read any of his books, he tells the non-fictional history of cities through fictional characters over generations. Sounds dry and boring but if you like big beautiful cities like London, Paris, New York you’ll love his books.

  11. Think my last comment got eaten by gremlins?! Anyway I LOVED LOVED LOVED GONE GIRL.
Read it in about a day and a half on a sun lounger in Greece. Annoying my friend immensely by yelling OH MY GOD and whacking her on the arm going YOU WILL NEVER GUESS WHAT HE/SHE HAS DONE NOW, mostly she to be honest. I will be getting the authors other works for my next week away in October. We even discussed who would play them in a film…Robert Downey Jr and Reese Witherspoon….totally

I can recommend Shoestring Club by Sarah Webb your going to look at the cover and go….oh thats just chick lit…but its so much better than that. The heroine is flawed, and you root./worry about her throughout. Its one of the only books I’ve read thats resulted in a change of behavior from me because I identified to much with the heroine, and an email to the author to thank her. She replied which totally made my day.

Oh and Armistead Maupin Tales of the City Series…they are my all time favourites, I have read them all a hundred times over, and I just love him and his words x

I’m almost embarrassed to admit it… but not really. I’m reading Drinking & Tweeting by Brandi Glanville (you know, from Real Housewives!). It’s both hilarious and awkward at the same time. Hilarious because you can totally hear Brandi’s voice and awkward because she does things like puts hash tags all through the book.

    • BabyMacBlogBeth says

Well that’s just plain AWESOME. I saw that in the bookshop at the airport…it’s like a dirty guilty pleasure right? I once read Katie Price’s autobiography. Yep. It happens x

  13. My husband travels a lot for work and he always brings me home a book from where he has been in the world (he writes in them too – its lovely!). Anyway as you can imagine he has hits and misses with his choices (he is NOT a reader at all)…….This book was a HUGE hit – I too devoured it in a day or two ….was frustrated at the end though as I thought it would end differently!!
If you loved that, read Before I go to sleep by SJ Watson…another hit and I couldn’t put it down until the end – full of twists etc…had to go back and re read sections after I finished it as I kept thinking about the story and looking for clues I may have missed! Leanne ๐Ÿ™‚

Last book I read was Judith Lucy’s drink, smoke pass out. She is so funny. Afraid I am a geek and currently reading health and epidemiology and don’t have enough brain cells to enjoy anything else at the moment!

I recently read ‘The husband’s secret’ by Liane Moriarty. It was SO GOOD that I got all her other books onto my kindle and read them one after another. I was a very slack mummy for a couple of weeks! I love a good book review so I’ll definitely give ‘gone girl’ a go.
    Stephanie.

    • BabyMacBlogBeth says

I got that from the bookshop yesterday! Can’t wait to get stuck into it. You would have been a better Mum from all that reading I think ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. Lisa Mckenzie says

I have not read this but will put it on my list,i read a LOT I am reading a good book atm called The Lies we Told,I read Under the Dome by Stephen King and loved it and have 2 more library books to read, must have a book on the go.

    • ahoy.jenni says

UNder the dome got a poor movie review, it wasn’t directed by stephen king, but the book sounds great, typical SK eekie!

  17. I read it a few months ago, what an amazing book! It left me feeling really uncomfortable at times, but it kept me reading and was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time!

  18. Its a great book isnt it? Her other two books are good too – ‘Dark Places’ and ‘Sharp Objects’. In a similar writing style is ‘Reconstructing Amelia’ by K McCreight. ‘Under the Dome’ is also briliant and I’ve not really read any Stephen King before either.
