Just another stupid anniversary post

A lot can happen in 8 years. Whole families can be made, careers changed a few times over, technologies developed, new lives started over. 8 years ago today Rob and I were married on Easter Saturday on the front lawn of Rob’s Dad’s farm. It was a perfect Autumnal afternoon where the light is a little magical and soft, everything crisp and clear and in focus. It still remains one of the best days of my life.Instead of writing a gushy love post about how much Rob means to me, about how he makes me happy every single day, or a more patient and kind person. How he is funny and smarter than I will ever be, so supportive of my own work and career, let alone still floats my boat, I thought I’d share with you a little something from our day all those years ago now.

Back in 2005 people still listened to CD’s. Well, we did at least. And we made a cracking mix tape for all of the guests at the wedding. These bad boys were sitting on every one’s plates and even though I have since transferred the CD to iTunes, it gets a run all the time. It’s a cracking album, even if we do say so ourselves.

Fortunately our marriage has outlasted Britters and K-Fed. I miss CD’s, don’t you?

A reading at our wedding was Leonard Cohen’s Dance me to the end of Love with top and tails the album, and our bridal waltz (if you can call it that) was Africa by TOTO. For no other reason than it’s an awesome song that mostly everyone says “oh I LOVE that song”. I walked down the aisle to Somewhere over the Rainbow and most of the other songs have a sentimental meaning to Rob or I. I love that I still have something I can hold in my hands, listen to and remind me of our day.

Robert Joe, as I said in my card to you this morning…”I just love you, plain and simple””I just love you, that is all”…I reckon we are doing orright. I hope we are still on high rotation in many, many more years to come.

What song did you walk down the aisle to?
Or attempt a waltz of the bridal kind to?

  1. That CD is an awesome idea!

Aww, you guys got married a week before us. Our 8th anniversary is next weekend πŸ™‚

  2. Congratulations! 8 years is big! You’ve beaten the 7 year itch πŸ˜‰ Love the CD cover.
Our first dance was to Under the Milky Way… kind of fitting for our inter-continental romance πŸ™‚
Have a great day today. x

  3. We waltzed to In This Time by The Tea Party. Closely followed by Scenes From An Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel.

  5. Beautiful post. I smiled all the way through and I’m still smiling now. Happy 8 year Wed Day!
Our songs…Loving You by Minnie Riperton. All You Need is Love by the Beatles. Crazy Love by Van Morrison and I’ll be Loving You Always by George Michael and Mary J Blige πŸ™‚

  6. The 26th March must be a lucky day as it’s also our wedding anniversary too. My husband and I have been married 24 wonderful years. We were married on Easter Sunday 1989 and it was the best day of my life. We have a video (yes that’s how old we are) from our day and it’s a lovely keepsake. Have a great day and best wishes to both of you. xToni

  7. Lovely idea!

  8. BRILLIANT!! Happy day love birds.

I totes walked down the isle to ‘Stephanie’ by Buckingham Nicks (Lindsey and Stevie before Fleetwood Mac).

  9. 9 years ago we had a string quartet play Canon when I walked down the aisle- traditional but gave everyone goosebumps! Wedding dance- heaven by Bryan Adams, cake cutting- by my side by INXS.
Love how you had Green Eyes on your album , that is one of my best ever fave songs!

  10. I just LOVE this idea Beth and wish I could rewind 15 years and do the same! Oh well….. Green Eyes, one of my ultimate faves! ‘youre the one that I wanted to find………’ LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! We signed our certificate to a friend playing ‘All I want is you’ by U2. It was magical. We walked out of the church to ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ INXS, and had our first dance to ‘Young at Heart’ – Sinatra! Lovely memories xxx

  11. Congrats
Walked out married to Shine on you crazy diamond by Pink Floyd

  12. Congratulations!!!
I walked down the aisle to ‘You Were There’ by Southern Sons, but it was sung by a very dear friend of ours and we danced to ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ by Nina Simone. We practised for weeks and the routine even included jazz hands!

  13. Somewhere over the rainbow featured on our wedding mix … got my first iPod that year but CDs ruled at our wedding. We had an ’80s and ’90s mix we took across the road to the the bar at 5pm (post lunch reception and busted a move. Literally. Happy Anniversary cool kids. x

  14. I walked down to Keith Urban “Making Memories of Us” and Walked out to Jack Johnson “Better Together” and our first dance was Damien Leith “Night of my life”. It was just over 5 years ago but definitely still remains one of my favourite days

  15. Happy Anniversary!
I was married on Easter Saturday as well, but it was in 1981 and therefore April 18th. Also my birthday, I’ll never get married on my birthday again, anniversary dinner & birthday dinner all on the one night, always felt ripped off.

  16. Our bridal waltz, 17 years ago in September, was Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds “The Ship Song” – imagine that I felt a little bit put out when a few years ago we played it for our then 9 year old son and he burst out laughing as he thought the lyrics were “burn your britches down” πŸ™‚

  17. I walked down the aisle to “She” sung by Elvis Costello from the Nottinghill Soundtrack. Bridal Waltz was “Hold me, Thrill me, Kiss me” sung by Gloria Estefan. 12 years for us this year, the best day πŸ™‚

  18. this is so gorgeous beth πŸ™‚ some beautiful songs in there. I walked down the aisle to norah jones’ ‘nearness of you’ and our first dance was to matthew sweet’s ‘i’ve been waiting’ for no other reason than it was the only song we could agree on! our taste in music differs hugely.. happy anniversary! x

  19. That is beautiful Beth. Happy, happy anniversary to both of you.xx
I too love CDs but then that’s all we oldies have plus of course our vinyl records which still sound better than CDs do.
Ours was a quiet wedding so no music or dancing but still a wonderful day….nearly 46 years ago. It was at Trinity Church in Perth so you can imagine someone just had to remember that old song “At Trinity Church I met my doom.” Fortunately it didn’t work out that way.

  20. What a beautiful idea…wedding soundtrack…love it !

Hubby and I married in 2001 and at the time mobile phones were used a lot, but nothing like today’s obsession. We have a photo in our wedding album of hubby talking to his oversea’s relatives on a mobile phone and my god the phone is so out of date now ! Makes me laugh each time I see that photo.

When it came to a bridal waltz we knew we could not do a slow dance. It just makes both of us feel awkward, even to this day. Dancing in general is just not our cup of tea, unless it is some crazy moves busted out at home, iTunes playing at full volume. So we choose to do a ‘fast’ dance to Smashmouth’s version of ‘I’m a Believer’. We didn’t rehearse at all, but somehow we managed to pull off one awesome impromptu dance routine that even now, 12 years later, the guests at our wedding still talk about. It is by far one of my best memories from the day.

    Happy Anniversary!
    x

  21. what lovely memories to have….sadly the powers that be forbids me to marry my lady love….but hey I live in hope that it will happen in our lifetime….fingers crossed x

  22. We had Harry Belafonte’s “Will his love be like his rum” aka the Wedding Toast, played by our friend’s west african band as our wedding dance. So so good.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3K2f5ekEWs. Seven years for us this year, in February.

  23. Happy anniversary!

We did a cd for all our guests too!
Since we had everyone travel to our wedding and half the guests had to travel around the world we actually did little Australia packs…a cd full of Aussie songs, cans of XXXX, stubby coolers, homemade Anzac biscuits, post cards to send home, some Berocca and other bits and pieces.
It was so much fun putting them all together and I like to think that all the guests loved them!

We walked down the aisle to a great friend playing his didgeridoo and then danced to Bernard Fanning’s watch over me.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

  24. Happy anniversary you two bloody big spunks! Love the idea of a mixed cd (tape) as a wedding favour – love. Because we eloped we didn’t do the big wedding thing, but I reckon we’d walk down the aisle as husband and wife to Blur’s Song 2 – WOOO HOO!

  25. Happy Anniversary! Oh I thought you said “i reckon we are doing it tonight” LMFAO! Umm, we are boring and I walked down the aisle to a beautifully voiced girl who sung Ave Maria. Oh how I love the Cranberries Dreaming my Dreams. Mmmm.

  26. Well I’m not married so I can’t address the wedding music issues but congrats.

Old Mr FF and I are going to clock up a decade soon and I endorse any sort of anniversary celebration.

Hope you are showered with Gift.

  27. Happy anniversary Beth and Rob!! xo

  28. I walked down the aisle to “at last” by Etta James. It took him 10 years to propose…

  29. Every year when you write this post, I go ‘Oh yeah, Beth got married the week before I did!” 8 years, next week.

I walked down the aisle to In My Life by the Beatles. A friend played it for us. Clint and I walked back up the aisle to God Only Knows by the Beach Boys.

Happy anni, I hope there are some French bubbles in your future. x

  30. Happy Anniversary!

I walked down the aisle to Canon in D. Cliched, but I’d heard it on one of those tinny music players they used to have in gift shops where they would play a selection of songs when I was a kid, and knew I woul have that song at my wedding.

Our bridal waltz was to one of our favourite bands -HIM. They’re Finnish, and no one else knew the song so it was just for us.

  31. Happy memories for you and I hope you have a cracking day and many more to come too. Like the CD idea – very nice touch

First dance – East 17 , ‘Stay’ because it had been number 1 the Christmas I’d left to go to Italy for two years leaving the lady I didn’t expect to wind up marrying behind. I came back, of course. Mainly because I got fed up of her phoning up and playing East 17 at me down the phone…

  32. This Old Love – Lior – sigh , happy days. Congrats guys

    Bel

  33. Beautiful lady, I love it! Sounds like the most perfect day and a fabulous soundtrack to match. Happy Anniversary to you & Rob xo

  34. We put all our songs on a cd as a keep sake. Must really put it on iTunes. I walked down the aisle to Angel by Jack Johnson. During the signing and all that guff we had ‘At last’ the beyonce version and ‘unforgettable’ by Nancy Sinatra and on the way back down was ‘if I had eyes’ by Jack Johnson. Our first dance was to ‘iris’ by the googoo dolls. These are all very special to us, the other songs on the cd are just as special but were played throughout the reception to get ppl up and dance. We even had the love song that Adam Sandler sings in wedding singer on the plane ‘I wanna grow old with you’

Think I might get the cd out tomorrow and reminisce a smidge. Thanks For sharing Beth and happy anniversary.

  35. We did a wedding CD for our guests too. We also had Tiny Dancer by Elton John, Better Together by Jack Johnson, Is this love by bob marley and a Coldplay track. But the best of all was a secret song that hubby had written and performed with his band just for me. I still play it from time to time and it makes me cry. Happy anny!

  36. Nawww, this is beautiful Beth. Love it! I walked down the aisle to strings playing Pachelbel’s Cannon in D and our wedding dance was to Wonderful World. It was meant to be the Nutbush, but at the last minute my hubby chickened-out so we reverted to something more traditional. Happy anniversary!! Fi xx

  37. Turned on the teev and there you were! Go you!!

    Happy Anniversary btw. πŸ™‚

  38. Happy anni lovebirds! I so love that CD as a wedding favour idea. That’s pure class! We also put our songs on a CD as a keepsake. I found it the other day while packing to move – the perks of packing! Anyways, I walked down the aisle to my first, my last, my everything by Barry White. Cheesy as cheddar but we loved it so. I think it’s because I once bought a singing toy dog, also named Barry (what a surprise,) that sang that song, first, last and for evermore. It’s random but we liked it. And when it’s your wedding day, that’s what counts! Thanks for sharing!
