My funny Valentine

When I was one, I had just begun.
When I was two, I was nearly new.
When I was three, I was hardly me.
When I was four, I was not much more.
When I was five, I was just alive.
But now I am six, I’m as clever as clever.

So I think I’ll be six now and forever.

Now we are Six
A. A. Milne

My Daisy, my biggest, you are six today.

SIX. I don’t want to sound cliched and like every other Mother who has uttered the words, but where has the time gone? How can it be? I suppose it just is. You are now six and that is that.

Last night in the bath you talked about how you were sad to leave five. You talked of five like a friend who has been with you throughout the year. You sat and spoke, without realising I was there, and you talked about all the bits that were the best. The fact that you were small and could hide, about how five was good at School without being too hard. And then I told you that even though you were leaving five behind, that five would still be in you. That five is still even in me – now after all that time! You decided that six sounded pretty good anyway and that you were so excited you could barely see straight that it was your Birthday in the morning.

Six will be good to you. You’ll learn so much. You’ll grow too – I wonder if you will ever stop growing at the rate that you do? Things will get easier, and some harder. I can’t wait to watch it all unfold, hold your hand when you need me and let go when you want me. I’m so proud of you. So proud that hot tears spring from my eyes just writing those words down. You make my heart soar with love and joy and pride and ache with worry of all the things that I want you to have, of all that I know you will be capable of.

I hope you can be six now, and forever. Everyone needs some six in their life, no matter how old.

Happy Birthday sweet girl. I just love you. That is that. x

  1. Gorgeous, lovely heartfelt words Beth.
Made me cry some tears too.
Happy Birthday Daisy, you are so lucky to have the mum you have.
She is so sweet saying she does not want 5 to leave her. I think it is very poignant how you tell her 5 is still in her and will never leave.
My son is 5, but growing too fast as well, starting school this year and already going on overnight camps and has had one tooth fall out. He told me the other day “Does being 5 mean I am not brand new anymore and getting old”. He contemplates life and death and has done so since he was 2.
