Morning walk No. 1

Morning’s are always the best time of the day for me. I’m awake and Bam! I’m always ready to start the day. Throw in jet lag and excitement and we can safely say that my day started at 4.50am. I tossed and turned and tried to get back to sleep but that city was luring me out there so I jumped in the shower, whacked my on shorts and t shirt and I was out that door before Mrs Woog had even rolled over and farted.

It was a great way for me to get my head around the city layout. We are staying on E44th street which is on the mid east side so I headed west down 44th before turning up Park Avenue heading north towards the upper east side. It was quiet (well for NY anyway) with a few people on their way to work, others running, fancy corporate types being dropped off to financial institutions by their drivers, sidewalks being hosed down, people getting their coffee.

I walked and walked until I thought I might be going round in the circles until I looked further left and saw some trees. Maybe I had made it all the way up to the bottom corner of Central Park?

I had! And crossing over Madison Avenue and 5th Avenue I saw some of those amazing NY buildings that you’ve seen a thousand times in movies. SO beautiful.

I stopped. Sat down. Soaked it up. There were a few runners about and that was it. Just me. And the Central Park pond. I know it’s getting boring, but I cried. Dreams realised will do that to a jet lagged girl.

It was just as I expected it to be in summer. Soft greens, a few flowers, green grass, ducks and those amazing tracks and rocks. CENTRAL PARK people.

After a little sitting and soaking I started my trip back home down 5th Avenue. THE shopping destination in NY for the label conscious and wealthy. Names you know, but don’t really know.

Those American flags blowing in the breeze on the front of each and every building.

Looking up and thinking “I know that place? I think?” then seeing it’s Trump Tower. See? Watching The Apprentice IS educational.

Stopping to watch a girl get her boyfriend to take her picture out the front of Tiffany. TIFFANY’S ON 5TH AVENUE. THE TIFFANY’S. Look at her looking at it back.

The most amazing shops and window displays in each and every shop all the way down.

I turned down a street when I got down far enough and found myself here. Again, I know this place! But I’d never been there before. Grand Central Station. People quietly shuffling across that amazing marble on their way to work.

I picked up a coffee for Mrs Woog on the way home (just like Mr Woog does) and excitedly told her about my adventure.

Just me and New York in the morning. I think I’m going to try a different spot each day.

  15. One of my best memories of New York is an early morning walk I took with my husband. Bit different to your experience as it was winter and well into the minuses. Still so amazing though and I kept feeling like I was in a movie.

Get back to 5th Avenue and check out the make-up floor at Berdorf Goodmans. Even if you buy nothing it is fantastic….

    Enjoy.
