Turning

I’m getting my head around the fact in a few days time it’s going to be MARCH. I still feel like it’s the third week of January and yet the girls keep picking up Autumn leaves from the ground and pointing them turning on the trees when we are out on our walks. Whether we like it or not, it’s coming. The seasons are on the move, days shorter, mornings darker, nights cooler. Autumn is just around the corner.

Without a doubt one of the things I love most about living in this part of the world is the seasonal changes. You can feel the changes, not just see them, you can smell them. My very most favourite season of all is Autumn. I love everything to do with it. The colours. The weather. Easter. The slowing down. The preparation for the cold winter ahead. I adore it.

With the seasons changing I also love the constant reminder that life goes on. Whether we’re ready or not, it’s moving each and every day. Sure it was Spring when we last got a good nights sleep and it might be spring again before we have things sorted in that department, the days will keep turning and the seasons changing.

Summer 2011/12 will be remembered by me for it’s pathetically cool, wet weather. For having the fire on about 3 times too many in December! For washing hanging inside all the time, for endless sleepless nights, for the dryer on more than it should be and of course for some glorious days in between: on top of the highest mountain in Australia, long days in the hot sun poolside at EIEIO, or for long summery afternoons enjoyed in the cool shade of the trees in our lovely garden. So long summer, I hope that next year you have a long, hard think about the areas in which you didn’t perform so well namely in being HOT, and consistently so. But, more than all of that, I hope that the next time we meet that I am looking a whole lot fresher and well rested than I was this summer. It’s been, um, real. Later.

What’s your best 2011/12 summer memory?

  1. What I can’t believe is that the leaves on my maple are already turning yellow! Its not time yet!! Something is going haywire with the seasons this year, but I do love glorious shades it produces. x

  2. I hate to say this, but I for one cannot wait for the cooler weather! xx

  3. autumn is my favourite too x

  4. I’m trying not to shoot the messenger here – but you just alerted me to the fact that Summer is over.
I know that it’s not your fault, Beth – we orbit the sun and all that – but I just need a moment to collect myself…. and double check my calendar.
    🙂 xx

  5. I missed summer altogether, I think we had better weather in the big apple. Bring on autumn!

  6. Love autumn – bring it on!

  7. Nooooo I do not want summer to end. Mind you our last week has been anything but summery. I feel totally gipped.

  8. Best memory?…holidays on the sunshine coast wins hands down

  9. i love autumn in my town too – crisp mornings and perfect afternoons. plus it will bring relief from the summer heat (sorry!!) i’ve had too many sleepless nights this summer, not a fan of that, especially since i don’t have kids to blame!

but i think my bestest day this summer was new years day. i got to bed early the night before, was at the local pool at opening time, had a lane to myself, swum my laps in gorgeous sun-sparkly water, then down to the cafe where i inhaled french toast with berries and marscapone, with a skinny flat white (of course)

wishing that your next summer is fabulous!

  10. Autumn is my very favourite – bring it on! But I’m sorry – I’m very glad summer wasn’t too hot this year. My fav ever Australian Summer…. I spent in Scotland and Latvia. But I do hope you get a lovely hot summer next year… as long as I’m somewhere cool! (And wishing you LOTS more sleep!)

  11. Oh yes. Autumn is my favourite by far. The beauty of the changing seasons, the crisp mornings, warm days, cool nights. The only thing wrong with it is it leads into winter!

  12. Been to the beach once this summer…wtf!!

  13. It really has been Autumn all Summer. Maybe we can have a Summery Autumn? x

  14. Summer…what summer? I do love that autumn is around the corner…but please hold off on the rain for awhile!!

  15. I must say I enjoy the Autumn changes in your part of the world too, love seeing them through your beautiful photos. It seriously doesn’t feel like we just went through Summer, such a topsy turvy season it was xo

  16. Best Summer 2011/12 memory were my first drinks post the arrival of Max.

It was a balmy, Melbourne night.

We were at this incredible place, with incredible friends, and … I got polaxed.

    Pol.axed.

Worst memory of Summer 2011/12 was the hangover the next day.

So Autumn is on its way, & that means daylight savings must be near finishing, & you know what that means …

    SLEEP!

    xx
