Showtime

A few days ago our local nearest town held their Annual “show”. A formal explanation is as follows: Aagricultural show is a public event showcasing the equipment, animals, sports and recreation associated with agriculture and animal husbandry. The largest comprise a livestock show (a judged event or display in which breeding stock is exhibited), a trade fair, competitions, and entertainment. The work and practices of farmersanimal fancierscowboys andzoologists may be displayed. Just in case you were wondering. I wonder what on earth is an animal fancier and how I can be one?!

Anyway, onto the good stuff! I was very keen to check out all the goodies in the Pavillion – the cakes, scones, sauces etc and Rob and I are determined that next year we will enter into at least one category each. I mean how exciting would a ribbon be for 6 scones, plain be? Very! And perhaps those Macdonald gals will be the Junior Preserve champions? A mother can only dream….

These baskets of 6 varieties of vegetables were amazing! They would have the fancy schmancy organic cafes in Waterloo in a state of country goodness nirvana!

I loved loved loved the different categories for the cakes. Orange cake, top iced – Orange cake, plain and they even have one where they give you the fruit cake recipe of which you have to work from. Simple. Honest. Goodness. Makes you just feel a little more wholesome just reading it doesn’t it?

We watched the Dairy judging and we soon became experts on it all throwing around expressions like “overall dairyness” and “veination of the udders” just in case someone suspected that we lived in the big smoke only 5 months ago now and the only thing we knew about cows were that they helped make our Campos coffee all the nicer. Not quite, but sort of.

Harper spent the entire time mooing. Loudly.

Then we ran into friends of ours who run a horse stud nearby. They had just won with their stallion. Isn’t he a beauty? He had bling all over his brow piece there and looked like the P-Diddy of stallions. Of course he won! It was very exciting to actually legitimately know someone too. And doesn’t she look fab in her hat?! Tick 2 for countryness for the Macdonald’s – not only knowing stuff but knowing people, local people!

It was a great morning for us all. Next year…watch out Robbo the Macdonald’s will be in town!

Comments

  1. Move over Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall, Beth Macdonald has arrived!

I went to the Lithgow Show randomly one year and was knocked over by the Arrowroot Biscuit decorating category. I’ve always dreamed about that ribbon on my mantle….

  2. Gorgeous! My Friends Lynne O’Brien and Caroline Marsh (who owned the cafe in robbo) always win the chocolate brownie ribbon at the Robbo show! Keep your eye out for them,….one bite has my kids twitching on the floor with their eyes rolling back in their heads! x

  3. We have our show this weekend and I was tempted to enter the baking – I even went through all the on-line kerfuffle… And chickened out. Next year for sure.

    But you guys! So country!

  4. I LOVE the show! We usually make a pilgrimage back to my hometown for the annual event. It’s always worth it.

Would you believe that even though I live 20 mins from the Bridge, we have a show in my new home ‘town’!?!? Love it!

Well be at the big Easter Show this year again too. I just can’t get enough woodchopping. x

  5. Just came to your blog after reading your guest post on SOHI. I currently live in Wollongong and dream of one day living in the Highlands (it’s on our 10 year plan). Look forward to reading more of your blog.
