BabyMac Book Club: Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine

In the hope of striking while the iron is HOT on this reading malarky I thought I would choose the next book again so we can get started on another round of the BabyMac Book Club. This will make it the third one for the year, we are picking up the pace and hopefully I’ll be back with my reading mojo before the year is out. I certainly have a pile sitting next to my bedside table that’s for sure.

If you are new to the idea of this virtual book club and are interested in joining in, here’s how it plays out:

HOW IT WORKS

We chose a book (you can send me suggestions at any time so I will go to you guys with a short list and we can vote…or maybe I will just choose!). We have 6 weeks to read the book (I was going to make it a month but we all know that’s not going to work). Then we come on and have a chat about it, I’ll ask some questions and we can comment on here as well as on Facebook (I think it’s an easy platform for throwing around quick ideas/conversations) which we can do over a glass of wine on our couches. We can all pretend we are sitting around my fire if we close our eyes…

#BABYMACBOOKCLUB ROUND SEVEN

This was another great suggestion from the book shop when I bought The Dry (and I’ve also seen a few people say they have enjoyed this) I have chosen Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. You can grab it online for $24.40 from Booktopia – it may be cheaper at other places too. Big W and Kmart are also places to find books cheap as chips.

“Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend.

Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life. Except, sometimes, everything.

One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself. Now she must learn how to navigate the world that everyone else seems to take for granted – while searching for the courage to face the dark corners she’s avoided all her life.

Change can be good. Change can be bad. But surely any change is better than… fine?”

The author, Gail Honeyman is a graduate of the universities of Glasgow and Oxford. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine was short-listed for the Lucy Cavendish Fiction Prize as a work in progress and is Honeyman’s debut novel. She lives in Glasgow, Scotland.

NEXT STEPS

Buy or borrow the book (for real or on your e-reader device) and get reading! You can buy it from Book Depository here for $22. There will be a post book wrap up virtual book club here on the blog on Thursday 26th October 2017 (6 weeks time). You can leave your comments on the post and we will aim to have a Facebook chat that night from 8pm (AEST) so pour your wine and get ready for a natter. Send me through any suggestions for books in the meantime and we can work out what the next one will be. I can’t promise Proust but I hope we can get through some good reads that will get us back into books instead of being lazy (like me) and spending all my time online at night.

Hope you can join in! Any questions, just let me know…oh and use the hashtag #babymacbookclub if you’re that way inclined. Let’s try to continue to get our reading mojo’s back!

Happy Reading friends!
