One thing: The actual BEST thing

Yesterday I had a man in. And not just ANY man, a man with a van here to do a job I despise. Now I am ALL for getting a professional in to outsource a job. I’ve spent many a post discussing my love for this, from ovens to gardens and of course a cleaner if I have the cash to do so. I figure that if I am working, and I can spend my time either working or with the kids, or doing something else on my endless to do list rather than spending a day doing said task, then it’s money well spent.

This man was here to do a job that brings me SO much joy, but it hadn’t been done for over a year (we got it done just before Rob’s 40th this time last year) and it was something sitting on my #onething list for many months. For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.

So, the man rocked up at 9.15am and immediately got to work.

CLEANING EVERY WINDOW IN MY HOUSE INSIDE AND OUT. Honestly, is there anything better than sparkling clean windows? I think not. Well, not on the home front at least. OK, maybe a clean oven, or fresh hedges, or a weeded garden, OK, maybe lots, but it is right up there for me.

It took him just over 3 hours. He was mainly in his socks with lots of superior squeegees and ladders and cloths and towels. He was good, really good at his job. I was interested to note his cleaning mix of choice was morning fresh. Huh.

And now? Well now there are clean, sparkling windows for me to look out of! I keep saying to the girls or Rob or Frank, whoever is around really….LOOK AT THE WINDOWS. And don’t you dare touch them. They are de-cobwebbed, de-spidered, de-moulded and condensation and everything gross that comes with windows in this climate.

It’s deeply pleasing. And I do not need anything else for Mothers Day. That’ll do, that’ll do.

It does however bring up another #onething job that has become apparent. While our house is only about 15 years old the windows and doors were used from a house that was over 100 years old (it has that lovely warped glass) but all the panes on the outside are starting to fall apart. Who would be able to fix the wood do you think? Anyone know? Another bloody job! Being a grown up can really bite sometimes (having just spent the past 2 hours paying bills and emailing and doing home/family life maintenance). Any insights to this appreciated!

What was your one thing this week?
Do clean windows make you as happy as me or do you think I may have a problem?
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…

  1. I know someone amazing at this type of job but as he lives on the Central Coast lets see if someone else knows someone close to you first. My guys name is Emery and he travelled to the North of Sydney to help. He scrapes back and adds old school putty to the windows and then sands and paints. Beautiful workmanship!

  2. Windows look great – By the way I my secret to a really clean wash in the washing machine is to use Morning Fresh instead of detergent – works a treat and just a squirt will do. Stubborn stains? Just rub a bit of MF before you pop it into the washing machine!!

  3. righto they look smick, morning fresh huh , might have to mix me some up , was it in a spray bottle or just used with elbow grease and a bucket ??

  4. My window guy arrives tomorrow morning – can’t wait!

  5. Would love the details of this amazing human please. I need my windows done too

  6. I have always thought that your windows looked older than your house and congratulated the people who built it sourcing such great replicas… glad to know that they are actually old!

    I am a house details nerd…

  7. Love clean windows. Your windows look even more glorious with the Autumn view xx

  8. We have a commercial cleaning company. Morning fresh beats any chemical hands down. Brilliant stuff. My one thing. To pack up 25 years of kitchen cupboards as we are getting a gorgeous new kitchen. So excited. Yay! Well im excited lol

  9. I’d consider double glazing your windows. We did the whole house a few years ago, windows and doors, and it is THE BOMB for noise proofing (the main reason we did it – household full of university students as neighbours and let’s just say our lifestyles were … incompatible) but it has also had great benefits re energy efficiency. We’re in Perth so it makes a big difference with cooling but I imagine in your climate it would help keep all that precious heat indoors where it belongs.

  10. Arghhhhh! my ONE thing was to ask my husband to put away the market umbrella (ours is really heavy and regularly falls over so it was lying on its side on the deck so that it didn’t fall over and break something/someone)…..and then I left the dog outside for 30 min and Voila! Shredded Umbrella! Needless to say, husband did not berate the dog…..

  11. My one thing for today was to clean the drains in the bathroom with baking soda and vinegar. Erm… apparently that doesn’t work too well in France, because now we’ve got to have a plumber in to fix the sudden link in one of the sinks and the clog in the other.
