One thing: The dodgy gate

As you know there has been a recent run of #onethings around these parts. The list that stares down at us from the wall next to the calendar has been taunting us with jobs and it has been a pure delight to cross a couple of them off.

For those of you not playing along, #onething is where I do just ONE THING from my to-do list, but not your every day to-do list. Oh no, this is the list of non essential items that sort of kind of need to get done but it’s no biggie if they don’t get done until next week, or next month, or um, next year. Those things. Just one. Every week.

Now while there exists a #onething list there is another list, that floats about the universe with jobs that have been put off for a looooong time. They are jobs that I hassle about, ask about, and get postponed. And I don’t quite know how they go from a proper list into the ether…I think it’s resignation and just plain giving up asking about it. Whatever the case, one of these things from the universe/ether list is our front gate.

Note: theses signs came with the house, Frank will lick you to death and perhaps do a glee wee. That’s it.

Our front gate has slowly been getting worse as the years pass by. It’s a massive thing that is hanging off a wooden post that was slowly rotting, making the gate sink so that it dragged across when you tried to open it. It was SUCH a pain in the arse, just ask anyone who visits here. I asked to fix it a lot. I lost my shit about it a lot. I listened to my family constantly complain about it, a lot. And then last week…the stars aligned and IT GOT FIXED. Thanks to the help of Mr Munro, and Rob, it bloody well got done. PRAISE BE.

There was talk of replacing the wooden post with a steel one, automation, this and that and I pretty much rolled my eyes and screamed more than once I DON’T CARE JUST FIX IT. And they did.

And you know what? I can now open the gate with one hand. A mere push and it swings! The kids can open it! IT’S FIXED.

This is a deeply pleasing turn of events. Apparently the next step will be automation and lighting and something else, but I don’t care when or if it EVER gets done, the gate is fixed!

What was your one thing this week?
Got a task that has been put off SO much it’s gone into the ether?
Go choose something, right now, just have a look around and there will be something waiting…

  1. I have so many “one things” … I fear a physical list might mean jobs weekly for the next decade! But I did do one this week … finally hung the key holder that has been sitting in its box for a month.

  2. Hahaha that’s awesome! I can remember the time I wrote a #onething list and stuck it on the fridge for hubby. He just rolled his eyes. I’m not even sure where the list has disappeared to, to be honest! ?

  3. I love your #onething and have been incorporating it in a slightly different way in my life – I do just #onething when I am transitioning between things – getting up to go to the loo, just put the dishes in the dishwasher, leaving to go to work, take the rubbish or recycling out, nothing big here but I have this ability to neglect everything then feel overwhelmed so my #onething interpretation just keeps things moving. And if I think of it as just one thing then it doesn’t feel like a chore. Keep up the good blog Beth!

  4. I love your #onething posts! Makes me remember all the things on mine and maybe, just maybe, I’ll get to one! Yesterday was a momentous occasion when I finally did an op shop drop. Sounds easy enough considering the op shop is 2 minutes down the road, or I could just give it to my Mum who works at the said op shop! 6 months of bags sitting around and finally they’re gone!

  5. Those two gentlemen are really my heroes.

  8. I too highly appreciate your #onethings and last weekend’s dreadful weather resulted to the 2016 photo book being put together & ordered & some kids stick-on chalkboard being stuck after buying them 2 months ago!
