So long summer

Summer is mornings that start early with hot sunshine beaming into your room to wake you and make you squint. It’s long days filled with swims and picnics, trips to the beach and prawns with lime squeezed on top washed down with an ice cold beer. It’s afternoons with naps, book reading and quiet time while cicadas drown the air with their sound. It’s evenings with walks and drinks in the shade. Long dinners with friends and family under the hot sun setting and the still nights with stars in the sky while candle light and mosquito coil smoke fill the air. It’s about a slower life. Cherished time with people that you love. Colour and light.

I do love summer, but I love what’s about to happen a little more.
What’s your favourite thing about summer?
What will you miss the most?

Summer to me is overheating, astronomical power bills, blowflies and bush fires. I am glad to see the back of it. Autumn is the most fabulous season of all, cool nights, crisp mornings and sunny days. BRING IT ON!

And let’s not forget the return of the TOPPER Kelley! TOPPER!!!

Oh my goooooooooodddddd!!!!! YES! *runs to the linen closet, trips on goddamn crap left on the floor by ungrateful children, sustains concussion but totes worth it* TOPPER!

  2. It’s 38 degrees in Perth today, so summer continues. I’m a Autumn/Winter girl, so I won’t miss the heat or the huge power bills, but, I do like sitting on the back veranda with a chilled glass of bubbles or a tall G & T on those late afternoons when the sea breeze is in and the heat of the day is disappearing. The smell of a piece of pork in the webber is also oozing summer!

Oh damn it. I just typed out a quite long comment and once again I was unable to post it so need to begin again.
There is nothing an aged person such as myself enjoys about our long hot Perth summers. Today is supposedly the first day of autumn and we are cursed with a temp of 38ºF (yesterday was 37ºC and tomorrow also forecast to be 37ºC). We have had continuous days for weeks above 30ºC (86ºF) and even summer lovers over here are sick and tired of the constant heat. At our place there has not been a drop of rain for over 3 months and our garden is looking very sad (water restrictions don’t help) and we are also feeling sad. I’ve even tried a rain dance but obviously the rain gods weren’t listening as nary a drop has fallen. LOL If i didn’t have a cat (and hubby) that need me and had more money I’d take off for distant parts where cool whether prevails, i.e. Tasmania or perhaps south island of New Zealand.

Actually we don’t have a real autumn here in the west but sort of go from summer to slightly cooler weather and then into winter when it is very mild. Do you have autumn colours where you live? There are very few deciduous trees here so it doesn’t even look like autumn. I remember the beauty of the autumn colours when in NZ many years ago, so much beauty.
Sorry to be grumpy Beth but I so long for being able to get outside again and enjoy cool, fresh air. I become a prisoner in the house when it is so hot and I need to escape. Even our nights are warmer than some of the daytime temps in the eastern states. : )

Mimsie, you need to come and visit me and let the cool weather soak into your bones! I do hope you get some relief soon. We get wonderful clear seasons here – the trees are already starting to change colours and evenings are cool. We’ve had mist and rain for the past 2 days and I’ve had the fire on too! May the rain come to you soon xxx

  4. We’re in reverse, this week the weather changed and we’re now up to 30 already today on the first day of spring. Summers are looooooooooooong here and winters are a matter of weeks. We’re trying to spend as much time as we can outdoors because very soon we’ll be locked up in our air conditioned cells.

  5. Gulp. I fear the end of summer and this post has me hyper ventilating can feel autumn tapping on my shoulder. Shudder. The thing I’ll miss most? Will miss the long days every day until they start to stretch again.
